Timmah's '96 Glanza V

Recommended Posts

This is my 1996 Glanza V - I bought originally bough it intending for it to be my daily hack with no real intent on doing much to it as I wanted something cheap, relatively economical.

Admittedly.. I took it for a wee test drive and felt like it was lot of fun and bought it on the spot.. if I had spent a little more time looking over the car, I would have probably passed on it as it has needed a bit of work and money invested in it to get it to where it is now.

This is what it looked like when I bought it:

Exterior wise.. the photos make it look 100x nicer.. but it's quite rough, but that's alright for me as I don't want to worry about where it gets parked.

After buying the car and spending a few hours I found the following issues:

- No coolant, the water was brown as poo (the previous owner topped it up as it was green when I looked - seriously who does that??)

- The heater didn't work at all

- The radio was dead and wiring was a mess

- There was a leak in the boot

- Central locking didn't work

- Wiper blades were so crap they did nothing

- Air filter appeared to have not been replaced in a very very long time

- Interior smelled of wet dog (still does sadly)

- The dash has been out at some point as only two bolts were holding it in

- Idles at 1500rpm whether hot or cold

- Found a major oil leak near the air conpump

-- The oil leak was because some clever person didn't do the oil filter on tight and was loose.

- An oil leak near the oil pump (not too bad)

- The passengers wing mirror looks to be off another model starlet

- The drivers side wing mirror has been poorly painted black

- The wing mirror controls didn't work

- The interior lamp didn't work

- The rear view mirror rattles like no tomorrow

- Thrust bearing is shagged and sounds like a big end bearing has gone when idling

BUT, the engine and turbo felt great! There were no issues revving or boost at all (hurry)

What's been done to date:

- Oil + oil filter

- brand new heater core ( $500 NZD later, ouch!)

- radiator flushed and pressure tested

- new air filter

- dash mounted better (not properly but 90%)

- radio wiring fixed + new sony radio

- Fusion under seat sub installed

- new wiper blades

- Painted the wiper arms

- new gearbox oil

- Fixed the boot leak

-- sadly this has been in a decent prang and the drivers tail light doesn't sit well at all with the chassis and you can see the questionable repair job

- New dissy rotor + cap

- new thermostat

- Interior carpet removed and water blasted, but it needs doing again.

- Replaced wing mirrors for colour matched ones

- Fixed the interior dome light

- Fixed the high idle

- Replaced the rims with somewhat nicer ones with new tyres

- Had the front calipers rebuilt

- New front pads

- New front rotors

- Replaced the rear view mirror (didn't fix the rattle)

- Replace one of the intercooler hoses

- Fixed the positive and negative terminals that had loose connections, causing the car to cut out

- Replace the heater fan

- Swapped the drivers side side skirt cap with one that didn't have a dent in it

Off the top of my head, the to-do/wish list is:

- New struts (probably Koni yellows)

- New springs (probably RS-R lowering springs)

- Cambelt, idlers and tensioner replacement

- New waterpump

- New Oil pump

- Replace the clutch

- Get fog lights

- Fix the front bumper

- Get new indicators

- Look at a custom front mount set up

- Install a Gizzmo boost controller

- Get a boost gauge

- Replace the rear muffler with a TRD one I have

- Replace the downpipe with a decatted one

- new 02 sensor

This is how she looks now:

A bit of vac hose and now my rattling rear view mirror is rattle free!

I also bought some cheap eBay silicon radiator hoses, but I think the internal diameter is too small to fit :S

Those hoses will most likely still go on.

Its a real struggle but you can do it.

Put the end of hose in hot water to soften.

Simultaneously twisting and use screw driver to lift edge up to put on last bit

That looks really well you keeping it stock?

At this stage, I think the biggest mod that will happen will be a front mount intercooler + an Electronic boost controller, but aside from that, some lowering springs, it will stay fairly standard.

Awesome, thanks for the tip!

Scored some clear style indicators, but the insides were looking pretty meh. So I pulled one apart and decided to try painting it with a random silver I had lying around. I think it looks better.

Weekend update:

- Found a slightly better condition bumper with fog lights, so I have installed this. The car looks A LOT better with fog lights.

- I recently purchased a knock-off Greddy Boost gauge from Aliexpress and this is now 99% wired in and working, I just need to wire up the dimmer and properly mount it

- I also bought some tail lights that feature a clear bottom strip instead of the red, but I haven't put these on as I need to get new bulbs

- I bought some RS-R lowering springs which I have been told are about to depart from Japan, woo!

I will pop up pics tomorrow when there is some sunlight.

Not a huge update, more of less trying to save up for new struts and top hats before installing my new RS-R lowering springs.

I have a new gear knob:

I also have a new leather gaitor coming from England, so that probably won't arrive for another 3 weeks at least.

Finally, I've replaced a couple of the LED bulbs in the dash cluster the traditional bulbs that are green, still waiting for some more arrive to finish it off, but it's looking much smarter now.

LED bulbs are awesome! Need to adjust them down a tad to stop blinding people

Dash is all nice and green again after being orange for almost a year now. Much nicer.

Boring update: some of the dash bulbs are going orange, so I shall order some proper LED ones to replace them.. again.

I also lightly opened the door one day and something in the door handle snapped and now it's very loose, time to order a replacement.

Didn't end up getting Koni's like I had originally planned, I'm sure the KYB's will be perfect and complimented well with the RS-R springs. A little stiffer, a little lower = sorted! For now ;)

I ran out of time today to install these, mainly because I was helping a friend with a hub swap and the donor car ended up crushing the dolly it was on, oops!

My SR had kyb excel G on when i got it. Pretty sure they were the factory upgrade on the SR as well as the TTE springs. I thought it was a pretty decent compromise between comfort and handling. A set polybushes for the Stock ARB and droplinks would also work well in unison with the shocks and springs imo.

I figured being a daily, I wouldn't need such a stiff set up, and they were half the price of the Koni's.

I will keep a look out for bushes. I'm sure after 241,000k's they will be shagged :)

Have to admit, stripping the paint did not go to plan at all and it looks really bad up close... ah well I'll get them sand blasted at some point.

Thought I'd give my car a little Xmas present, sadly none of the well needed engine maintenance it requires, but the was fun to install:
