Pierro's El54 Paseo Aka Project Pi

Recommended Posts

Well I'll start with my main car a Toyota EL54 Paseo, which most of you will know that shares many similar parts with Starlets and this is the main reason that I choosed it (I drived a Starlet as my first car since 99 that my father bought it brand new). The Paseo is actually a bigger bored Starlet in a coupe form smile.png .

In the last 2 years that I have the car I had some "misfortunes" that hold me back. Although I kept going and the project is now starting to take form. The main idea is to make a good all-around car, that will cover every need I have from driving every-day to work to having some track (and not only) action.

So I've started from building the handling/safety first with suspension/chassis and braking mods, making some aesthetic mods and now that most of them are sorted I'll proceed and concentrate with the performance mods.

For the time being I've made an engine swap with a fully re-builded 5E-FHE engine with stock parts from Toyota (unless mentioned) and the next big step will be a light turbo conversion sad.png .

really nice example buddy. where did you get the tweeter housing by the mirror blanks? would most like a set of them.

They are custom made using the original triangles and fiberglass. I've spent about an hour to find the proper hearing angle with the audio installer :( .

i was afraid you were going to say that. just going to have to have a go myself, which should be fun :p

Hehe custom all the way buddy! Get some extra triangles and get started! :D

And remember the whole deal is about the right angle :(

theres alot of attention thats gone into your build. very minted work mate. :p

could you tell me all about your brake setup? like where you got the idea to use those calipers and what discs you use?

if you have those calipers a brake master cylinder would help more. have you considered that?

in the second last picture there is a na sleeper ep91 in the midle, whos is that?

Thanx once again for the comments guys!

How lush is the TTE splitter for Paseo's like :p

Its by far the best splitter for the Paseo (at least thats my opinion) and man I was waiting around 2 years to source one and I gave an arm and a leg to get it, but it was well worth it as it was the last one made and it was brand new in its box (although it is discontinued 7 years now :p ).

Well its quite a common brake swap for jap cars, mainly for Nissan's, but I've seen it in a couple of Toyotas as well. Plus Zep makes a kit to be used with this calipers. But I was on a budget so I've sourced a nice pair throught ebay and fabricated with my mechanic a custom kit. If I remember right (not 100% sure thought), we used aftermarket rotors that were originally made for Fiat Coupe 20v Turbo and had some custom aluminium adaptors made for the calipers. I also shaved the "Nissan" logo and paint them red. The only down side is that I had to get some custom spacers and wheelnuts in order to have proper clearance, plus no more 15's (or a spare wheel) for me. :p

I've consider using a brake master cylinder (and will probably do in the future when I'll have the money).

For the time being the brakes are satisfying (specially with the hp I'm running) and they are quite progressive, which I like. I'm only afraid that it may cause wheels to lock more easy under hard braking (my model is missing of ABS as you can see from the engine bay pic).

The green "sleeper" is a friend of mine (aka NosSystems but he doesn't use nitrous) that on the last dyno made 172hp (crank) @ 1bar on a hybrid CT9 setup (stock internals) and in sort time the car will be able to work 1.2 with a better mapping that didn't had time to make before the dyno. :p

Lovin your work thus far Pierros.

Keep it up and hope you get those few things sorted.

Thanks for the lengthy chat.

p.s Casshern is nuts lol...

Talk soon

Joz

Cheers Joz, nice talking to you too. Hope everything will go as planned with your project :p

p.s Yeap Casshern is mental ...

@Pierros. thanx for the info, yea id understand your aprehenshion as you dont have abs

i was aware of the zep brake kit but was not sure of the discs you used, how did you go about measuring the adapter plate for the caliper?

also how much of a spacer is used for those discs, they are lovely, did you require any modifiacation to the actual discs as i remember fiat calipers having a smaller pcd?

sorry to spam Pierros but NosSytems welcome to uksc your car is a true sleeper!

would you like to start your own thred bud?

I'm not 100% sure if it was the Coupe 20v Turbo, but no modification was made on the discs. I think that the specific model has the same pcd. Also I think that they alternative use Nissan GTiR discs for 15' wheels fitment but I think that they need some modification in order to fit.

The spacers I used are custom made and they are quite small about 5mm. The adapter plate was fabricated by a pro brake specialist that I have the whole kit prepered and fitted.

Here is how they look

Well I've finally managed to go for a dyno-run and unfortunately the results were as I was expecting them... BAD.

97,3hp and 96.7 lbf/ft torque was much less than I should have seen based the mods I have.

My engine is in a very bad shape lately and it burns A LOT of oil. All the outer seals have been changed and now the next logical step is to open the engine and change the valve seals and maybe the valve springs as well.

After doing that I have some more items to add and go to the dyno once again to see if it made any difference. Anyway here are the result and the dynosheet

PASEO DYNO RUN

Rule power: 71.6 kW (97.3hp)

Wheel Power: 54.2 kW (73.7hp)

Dissipate Power: 14.5 kW (19.6hp)

Engine Power: 68.7 kW (93.3hp) @ 5390 RPM (155.7 Km/h)

Max Couple: 131.1 Nm (96.7 lbf/ft) @ 4514 g/m (130.4 Km/h)

Max Speed: 6192 RPM (178.9 Km/h)

VamagDyno2.jpg

Soon a video of the dyno will follow ...

Was sorry to hear about the oil burning issue man. High mileage 5Es do that but yours isnt that high?

Still looking forward to the dyno vids any Pierros :p, hopefully I'll be doing the same in the next few months :p

Really nice paseo you have there, loving that splitter :)

Is a shame about the oil problem would have thought it'd be putting out a bit more than that :( stick a tubular inlet manifold on it, will be loving the revs then B) - also I want your torque curve/line B)

Keep it up dude

Cheers for the comments guys. I'll change the valve seals by the end of the month and have another compression test just to make sure.

A tubular inlet manifold is in my short future plans, so I will definitely give it a go, although I don't know what will happen then with the low range torque. But there is only one way to find out.

I have also noticed that the engine is probably running quite lean and I have to short it out (I have already ordered a piggyback, but hasn't arrived yet).
