sdutton007
Is it possible to fit locking/freewheeling front hubs to an EP85?I'd really like to be able to switch between rwd and 4wd quickly and easily - rwd for drag racing, 4wd for handling. daniel_g
Keeping it in 4wd is gonna be better for drag racing. My 85 gets off the line pretty well. Plus if you start putting all the power to the back you will snap the halfshafts. And there is not much weight at the back of a starlet to push the tyres to the tarmac. sdutton007
Thanks for the info. Are the half shafts much weaker than the front driveshafts?I had heard that rwd was better for drag due to losing less power through the drivetrain, less chance of destroying the clutch and when you launch, the weight transfers towards the back pushing the rear tyres into the tarmac. daniel_g
The rear halfshafts are very thin, putting anything more than say 200bhp through them (if you converted to rwd) and they'll snap sooner or later, especially with grippy tyres and launching off the line.If you were doing a rwd drag starlet then be a good idea to swap the axle out for a pajero rear axle with a lsd.4paws have open diffs front and rear which is not really ideal, still hook up pretty well and put good power down though
morgey
They also have a viscous coupling that saps like 70% of the power going to the rear. But that would also prolong the life of the rear diff and axles

Duno who came up with that number though, possibly Geo.Removing the VC and swapping out the rear axle for something more meaty with an LSD seems a good option. But if anything the front wants an LSD first. As for the switchable 4wd well anything can be done, just depends how much money you wanna plough into it.
