So time to start a progress thread so that I can remember what I've done.

So to set the scene I was looking to import a glanza from Japan as a bit of a toy and something to tinker with. Not being one to do things by halves, and liking to make life difficult for myself, when an ep95 that had already been 4efte converted went through the auctions it was only going to end one way. 399171751_pic(11).jpeg.a8269b84dc5525e6acba4021a25aed87.jpeg760073835_pic(10).jpeg.9a31d7c260c74e402ec24820d3f9f25e.jpeg797910009_pic(9).jpeg.4d039eb11460507aef3aa098a49d4a09.jpeg

So fast forward a few months and it arrives, condition is every bit as rough as I was expecting. IMG_20201031_120919.thumb.jpg.8ee67fe0042e4c3ec1b23b56a0f34d47.jpgIMG_20201031_120927.thumb.jpg.625233809f7e25911bc9783fcc7d389a.jpgIMG_20201031_152137.thumb.jpg.6f49fda247fece391b50616469a5f055.jpgIMG_20201031_152152.thumb.jpg.484de1c554190642dda5c513411fa930.jpgIMG_20201031_152205.thumb.jpg.ecde3ce8ed9f79ef90fec04d832f175e.jpg

Underneath looks pretty good for the age, but of surface corrosion that will be duly treated but no real penetration.

So despite already having a wepr on order I decide to look for a ct9 manifold just to keep me going for the time being. Had a small crack in it, which the seller kindly welded up for me before sending.

All goes smoothly and I find that with enough mapp gas even the most stubborn of nuts and bolts come loose

IMG_20201103_114228.thumb.jpg.f3dd6fa061395c918c846747f7515ff3.jpgIMG_20201107_151623.thumb.jpg.462820dcdea9e7c70dd15fcce5ff2324.jpgIMG_20201107_151630.thumb.jpg.2d24f96083b9a9ccd177a5b7fb2289fc.jpg

All except this one, but as this picture was taken before I attempted to remove it, it was obvious that this would shear from the start, however with more gas and some mole grips it was soon out.

And at this point you all get to have a laugh at the state of the exhaust. I think a custom system may be required to replace this mess

So unfortunately this doesent solve my problems, the strange high pitch rattle/squeal is gone (yes I did check the turbo for play) and in hindsight it was brobably just one of the heat shields as they were all missing bolts.

The noise has however been replaced by a high pitch whine when on boost. Now I'm no mechanic and new to turbocharged stuff so had to ask Facebook. (the obvious choice when wanting advice 😜) most people seemed to think it's a boost leak, and this seems to tie in with the fact that it only does it under load. This of course means that it is bloody difficult to find as I can't exactly stick my head under the bonnet whilst boosting down the road at 50mph. I tried to clean and reclamp all the pipes but no change. Perhaps its because they're 25 year old rubber pipes that didn't like being moved, perhaps its not a boost leak, time will tell. The boost guage is just a cheapy that someone local to me was kind enough to gift me, just thrown in to see what is happening with the turbo and the boost is holding a steady 9-10psi.

So having a break from turbo stuff, today I decided to tackle the grotty interior. The previous owner in Japan had decided to badly spray paint the interior black, it was horrible and needs to go. IMG_20201130_144801.thumb.jpg.78c08eec5f3a021985975a33fb2ae0ce.jpgIMG_20201130_144915.thumb.jpg.eafe4930b4844f9e69385e01c36d962b.jpgIMG_20201130_144413.thumb.jpg.ba9cb8d8006bf8b42a832d7269b22a3b.jpgIMG_20201130_144920.thumb.jpg.ac06ad1cd255f72b9d177760bcb5083f.jpg

New dash door cards etc all fitted, good few hours work but worth it.

And the postman has been today

IMG_20201130_145227.thumb.jpg.d3ff5ba928b8c8e8047bcd6893853cbe.jpg

I'll see if I can get these fitted this week. Not sure how to tackle the panhard rod though as you can't get an adjustable one for the 95

Cheers guys.

Today I solved the elusive boost leak, by replacing the intercooler and all associated pipework. All boosting correctly now and looking much better too.

It might be a while until that gets fitted though as there's a fair few bits needed still to make it all work.

nice work.

what make is that turbo kit looks mega.

It's a wepr kit, the turbo I'll be fitting is a tf035 from a forester, same fitment as td04 but slightly smaller and quicker spooling. I'm only aiming for 200bhp so I felt the tf035 will suit it better.

What ecu you going for?

Still undecided on that, I know that e-manage is more than capable for my target, however I can't help feeling a full standalone is going to be the best option, for reliability and future mods such as cop. I am very interested in the me221/me442 units, however I haven't seen a lot of feedback on these. Other options I'm considering are link or haltech but the instillation is obviously a bit more involved.

So more progress and more problems.

I couldn't just leave those coilovers sat in their box, so despite the lousy British weather I decided to get them on. These cars are so bloody easy to work on.

It's fair to say it was sitting a little high.

Started with the rears just to make sure I had been sent the correct kit.

Will still need to sort the panhard rod, and get it in for an alignment. There was a little bit of arch rub on the test drive, so I might up the preload a bit and see if that helps. Also seemed to get a rotational knocking noise on the test drive, so will need to check that I did everything up and maybe look at the cv joints.

And on the test drive I discovered that 1/3rd of a tank on the guage actually means your gona be walking. 😂🚶‍♂️🤦‍♂️

Looking good James. Massive amounts of progress in such a sort amount of time. The stock height on starlets is shocking🤣

Just wondering what happend with your other front bumper?

Cheers mate, I've had this week off work hence the progress, I'm back to working 60hr weeks from next week so things will slow down a lot lol.

Stock height on the 4wd's is crazy.

The front bumper is currently sat in my back garden, it was clearly never meant to go on a starlet, but for the life of me I can't work out what car it was designed for. A lot of the modifications to the car had been done to a very low standard, thankfully the engine swap was done right.

Good progress so far. You'll love the 4wd when you get some decent power through it.

You can get aftermarket adjustable panhard rods and even 4 or 5 link kits for AE86 to fit to these, to help with the rear alignment. Or to get the back a bit lower.

Thanks, will the ae86 bits fit straight on or will they need to be modified?

I'm already having great fun even at stock 4efte power, I didn't expect it to be so tail happy, spins the rears up nicely on the wet roads.

The 4wds, with handling mods, can be set up a few different ways depending on how you like to drive.

It would depend what set you get. I was in talks with a company who makes them, called modception. Check them out. Best to measure yours and double check.

His were, measured from pivot points:

Lower links 455mm +/- adjustability

Upper links 230mm +/- adjustability

Panhard rod 760m +/- adjustability

I'm still annoyed you beat me to this at the auctions lol, was only looking for something to load up with parts to save shipping haha. Annoyingly they've stopped that now. Looks a good base tbf, 200bhp-ish mega quick spooling and 4x4 should shock a fair few cars

Sorry not sorry lol. Was a lot of interest on Facebook when I shared the auction pics, naturally I didn't share them until after I'd won the auction 😂. 4x4 really doesent work like you'd expect. Behaves like a rear wheel drive if you get too enthusiastic with the noisy pedal.

Not much progress at the moment, trying to recover financially from Christmas and the coilovers. Decided to chop some holes in the Bootlid to try and give it the proper glanza look from the rear. I can honestly say it's the first time I've ever taken a grinder to a perfectly good panel haha. IMG_20210209_202154.thumb.jpg.38a8fb51844a644a3fb7c6bd2b11cbcd.jpgIMG_20210205_122520.thumb.jpg.a2cf1586b573e25a4af99634cc372892.jpg

I know it's the wrong colour but I'll worry about that later.
