So I did some research on it and can't find what I looking for. Most of the posts refer to g6 instead of ae111.

I want to know the difference, in term of performance, between ep82 5 speed box and ae111 6 speed box on a starlet.

For street cruises, can I say 6 speed is more practical to use as it revs faster than 5 speed? Even on a Turbo?

If I look for response and acceleration, which box should I use (on 4e starlet)?

Any opinion is welcome.

The g6 box is from a 1.3 corolla so will bolt straight up.

The g6r and levin 20v boxes are from 4a engines so will need the bell housings swapping over.

The 20v 6 speed has really short gears. Mine was doing @8400

30

55

85

105

120

Not sure in 6th as I was limited still

Put that on a 4e with 7500 limit and all you will see just how short they are

So obviously the top speed is lower, isn't it?

But for quick response, like in corner, is it better than 5 speed?

I think of this because of the 4.3 final gear in ae111 box.

In my country we can't go really high speed, so I prefer fast aceleration than top end power.

It seem the c160 reach lower speed at 7500rpm in each gear.

However, I am curious that whether rpm climbs faster due to the 4.529 final gear?

If so, can I conclude that, c160 acelerates faster than c52?

Let's put the strong/weak thing one side. Just focus on aceleration.

6th gear has been known to strip itself but I've also heard of them handle 450hp+

The diff in them is a great bit of kit though. Putting one back in my car. Prefer it over the cusco

450hp+ seems to be unrealistic to me...

Can't imagine how can I make use of that big power..

I would prefer something more practical to drive...

let say 200hp? Can c160 manage this hp?

It should be real fun to drive with a diff!!

Why would you say it's better than cusco?

Sorry for many questions.

I just want to understand more about this area.

by the way, is it possible for put c160 final gear into c52?

Had to say whether it would hold up or not. They come stock with 165hp and 120lbft for comparison. And the corolla t-sport uses a c160 as well I believe which is 190hp and 130lbft and they don't seem to have the same problems so might be worth looking at one of them?

The oem diff is easy to drive daily. The cusco diff is aggressive and snatches the steering unless you have your foot down.

No as the final drive links with the output shaft. You have a 5 speed shaft and a 6 speed shaft so to fit the c160 you would need to fit the gears from the c52 to the c160 shaft and the positioning of all the gears would be wrong. (I assume at least)

The diff itself is a direct swap, you need to change the ring gear. Although i have read that it is possible to swap the c160 ring gear and press the pinion gear off and on to the c52. ill have a c160 diff next week so ill throw up some pictures.. hopefully it has the ring gear so we can use it for reference, but i just want the lsd for now ;)

It seems that it worth a go for 6 speed.

by the way, anyone here had it on their starlet?

would love to hear some experience.

  • 2 weeks later...

The 1st and 2nd gear on the 6speed go very quick on a 4efte

I used it on both fe and fte and wouldn't regret changing from 5 to 6 speed.

Less load on the engine and helps if you have a big turbo strapped on your setup,

I've run ct9 and ct9 hybrid and acceleration is very quick, also cruising on motorway in 6th is cool and if you drop it to 5th for some fun, normally 6th is spot on motorway from 50mph

Limit is around 145 but even on track days it's very rare you reach then speeds on the straights

So for both street and track it's very good and I've got a quaife LSD which helps with 1st and 2nd gear spin ups as you you can easily spin it up without LSD
