Coolant temperature sensor

Hi guys my n/A I noticed the temperature wasn't reading up on the dash so I checked the wire on the sensor was ok just took it off and put it back on ok now.

Does this temperature sensor only measure the temperature of the Coolant?

It's the one with the single back spade connector.
