Autogauge Water Temp Sensor

as title, i cant seem to get a reading on the gauge, all wired up, but do you need to earth the sensor as well? ive just got the green wire attached to it?

if its a mechanical gauge you only need the water line plumbed in, mechanical gauges only need live and earth to light up usually. some cheaper ones need the sensor earthed and a live too.

If its a digital display you'll need live and earth on the ignition on line.
