Idrees
It all depends on how well the engine has been maintained mate. Generally speaking, if the little FTE has been serviced regularly and generally maintained properly, they can do over 250k miles without a rebuild imo.
Jozinobi
My 1993 GT engine (in UK EP91) has over 220k km on it and its had a 1k+ standard rebuild for peace of mind.I have been assured that it is now fresh and it certainly drives like it.This saves it inevitably breaking down in the near future just due to age, wear and tear and associated leaks etc. Here is the level of rebuild that I went ahead with on my project with some things probably unlisted:- Cylinder head tested, skimmed, port matched and chemically cleaned.- Engine block tested, skimmed, bores rehoned and chemically cleaned.- Three angle valve grind- Crank polished- New Toyota oil pump- New Toyota piston ring set- New ACL bearings- New Toyota valve stem oil seals- New Toyota headgasket- New Toyota crank oil seals- New Toyota oil filter flange gaskets- New Toyota rocker cover gasket- New Toyota camshaft seals- New Toyota Inlet manifold gasket- New Toyota Exhaust manifold gasket- New Toyota turbo oil return pipe- New Toyota Rotor arm and distributor cap- New Toyota Inlet manifold port matched- New timing belt and rollers- New Toyota injector seals- New Blueprint fuel filter- New NGK sparkplugs- New Blueprint WaterpumpMore info and photos of the rebuild can be seen hereAs Idrees said, these really are bulletproof engines if maintained properly, however it is more to do with miscellaneous gaskets and various oil seals that start to get crusty and crumble due to age which will need replacing. Once you have some of the engine apart you may feel that you want to go all the way and start replacing bits and pieces in the head. A 4EFTE toyota rebuild kit will cover all of that. If you ask many people including myself, 'if its not broken don't fix it'. This means that it will work out better to drive your FTE engine and enjoy it until it really does need a rebuild without neglecting it. Obviously if you have very serious problems such as major oil leaks or knocking from your bottom end than a rebuild would be very much on the cards if you have the funds and want major peace of mind. At 75k miles she should be fine if she has been looked after by looking at the service history. I'd service or replace the turbo only if it is giving the car problems. As it is a turbo engine, oil consumption is higher so make sure to maintain your oil level religiously on a regular basis.Hope this helps Joz
