The Toffinator
Currently timing up my Forged Engine and am just wondering a few thingsIts a high compression (8.8.1 Or close enough over the standard 8.5.1 people use) 5EFTE with flattop pistonsI am using a vernier gauge which i have set to the factory pulley or as near as i can get as its a bit of a twat lol, and at the moment when its all timed up with the 5E Mark on the Cam pulley, and the bottom pulley mark is against the oil pumpHowever it is out by 3-4mm to the left (Looking at the timing belt side of the engine)My question is this advancing or retarding the timing? I wouldnt mind retarding the timing a tad for safety with it being Highish compression. So is it left of the mark or right of the mark to retard it? Thanks!
AdamB
What is 3-4mm out mate? The cam pulley? That will be retarded as the engine rotates clockwise. Have you not got an adjustable pulley? Then you'll be able to tell in terms of degrees of rotation rather than mm.
The Toffinator
The bottom crank pulley adam. Its 3mm out dead, top Cam pulley is bang on the 5e markAnd yes bud its an adjustable
AdamB
Is No1 piston at TDC mate? Forget the stock pulley marks their shit, as long as you can get No1 piston as close to TDC as possible judging with a dial indicator forget what the pulley says bud. Providing No1 is at TDC, then leave the crank pulley as is, its not adjustable. You don't need to time the crank in, its just the cams.
glanzagee
When putting the belt on are you taking up the slack on the non tensioner side of the belt I.e the mark on the crank put it to 55mins and the cam on its mark put the belt on and turn the crank clockwise and the mark should be spot on Have a try a let us know ;)
The Toffinator
^^^^^You were right mate thanks alot, got it tensioned right up then just let the spring do its thing, nipped it up after and turned the engine over a few times, timings now absolutely bang onOn another note, the alloy crank pulleys timing mark was a mile away from the standard one so i have hacksawed one into it in the correct place, tip for other people! glanzagee
Do me a favour take that stupid alloy pulley off and put the oem harmonic pulley back on That's if you want your crank bearings to last
The Toffinator
I would if mine wasnt smashed to bits. Cause no harm anyway really its a load of shite, slightly increase wear mabye but it wont be doing millions of miles and will have the bearings etc changed when there supposed to be
