  1. I'm not sure if the 4efte uses a IDL input off the TPS, but if you tweak the throttle stops and it does, it won't be within spec anymore.

You could crack the throttle open a tiny bit and reset the TPS if you really wanted to do it this way. But idle adjustments should be able to be set with the idle screw.

I've seen other Toyotas have the idle raised this way and without resetting the TPS it causes all sorts of idle and off idle issues.

  2. It's been a hectic time over the past few months, lots of track days, got made redundent at the Toyota wreckers(breakers to you lot :() on the Thursday before Good Friday, hired by Mitsubishi Dandenong to be the pre delivery mechanic, I'm the last one to roadtest cars before a customer gets it. Exciting as that may sound, our dealership doesn't get evos :)

We had a dyno day (rolling road??) and my 20v just pipped the girlfriends Starlet GT, mine 82.9fwkw, hers got 81.2. Her car makes more torque all the way through, in a drag race I reckon she'd win.

GT belongs to Ying, my girlfriend, she's currently only 2 secs slower than me around the track, but she runs semislicks (cheater)

The pics with the HUGE wheels are around the end of summer, air temps were around the 36c degree mark, I had the track to myself after everyone packed up because of the heat. GO 4AGE!

So easy to drive, I let Ying have a steer after the turbo died on the GT after 2 laps. She spun in my car...... Did I mention that it's easy to drive haha

New wheels (to me, 145AUD bucks on fleabay) factory option for echos and yaris, 15x6 wearing bridgestone re001 in 195/50/15, faster than the 205/40/17 Toyo T1-R at half the price

Development has stopped for now as we are saving to go Japan. But don't worry I'm still going to the track, someone has to get out there and school all the wannabes in their evos and m3s :p

A few short flybys on the start finish straight

  3. I did everything except the exhaust myself, would've had a go at it myself but I ran out of time and we needed to get it on the track.

All up it's costed me about 2000 AUD to do the swap,

    500 for the motor

    50 for the gearbox

200 for a chomoly flywheel 4.3kg or something like that

    250 clutch kit

    150 for a blacktop brain

    500 for the exhaust :)

350?? for clamps, cables, hoses, solder, heatshrink and other stuff i've forgotten

I was working at a toyota wrecking yard at the time so getting all the bits wasn't a problem, doing a bit of r&d during my lunch break certainly helped when the time came to make it all work.

Drop half a bottle of octane boost into your next tank, I know my engine/ecu loves it.

  4. Haha, I'll probably give it a miss seeing as me and the car are located in Melbourne Australia :)

I've been on a dyno with mine and the power is certainly up top

Power is in kW, and the rpms is a little bit off as they hold the dyno at 3000 on your tacho, then tell the computer it's at 3000, so any speedo error, tacho error, comes up as a wayward rpm figure. so peak should be about 7800 on mine

    th_Dans-Starlet-4age-20V-Dyno.jpg

click on it to see the big version

Haven't yet limited in 3rd as I choose to use a taller diffed gearbox, 3rd would take me to 172 kph before it stopped.

  5. Congratulations on building another 4AGE powered Starlet, it's the way of the future just between you and me. Once all the 4EFTEs dry up they will have to turn to an A motor.

I've driven mine without filters for about a month, was heaps of fun, quiet quiet, NOISE!!!!

But eventually the noise wore off and the older more sensible side of my brain said we are gonna get pinged for noise, so the stock intake went back in.

I shift when it goes da da da, and since it won't rev any higher you can just pop the clutch and jam it in a new gear without lifting off the throttle :p

corolla gearboxes are cheap, well mine was

  6. I previously had the smaller 230ish mm discs on my EP91, totally fried them at a track day, had to go slow every second lap to let the brakes catch up. The discs turned blue and they didn't have any of the initial bite they used to have on the street. Even after a few weeks of regular commuting didn't improve inital bite.

I then put in the turbo sized rotors 250ish mm and calipers with some street/track BLAKE pads I got from yahoo auctions, next track day I could stop as much as I liked till the tyres went all gooey :( Still had to do cool down laps!!

Although pad fade isn't an issue anymore, the discs have still gone a nice shade of blue, maybe suggesting that I need more airflow.

The 250s will make way for a set of ST184 brakes, 274mm, minimum 15 inch wheels. And a GT rear setup to go in the rear, just because the rear drums look a bit pov. Only need a spacer to centre the disc in the caliper, and drill 3 holes in the disc. I'll put a larger master cylinder in while I'm upgrading.

  7. Was going to go the alloy trumpets that I had gotten from yahoojp auctions (I love auctions.yahoo.jp, although my wallet doesn't :)) Pics of said sexy trumpets in my rides thread.

But the race shop that I was going to get sock filters was closed before race day, so I ended up putting the factory air surge tank back on. It got a generic k&n jammed into the end of it just so it wasn't sucking unfiltered air. Job finished go racing....

I've had a thought, and redoing the air surge tank is a right pita, so I'll stick with what Toyota made. Plus it's plenty noisey without being exposed, and when I get a spare moment i'm going to relocate the battery to the rear and put a factory type airbox with a proper cold air feed.

Once you've decided where you want the engine, and you really only have a choice in the location side to side, the hardest bit is shafts. Lucky for me I work at a wreckers (I think I would be a breaker in you part of the world) and we have LOTS of shafts and cvs to play with.

I'm still not entirely happy with the exact placing of my engine, it's a few mm out. But until I pull it out again, thats how it'll have to stay.

We had a ZZE122 come in last week, the 1ZZ-FE measured up to be some 40mm shorter than the 4AGE package. So maybe in the future I'll have a ZZ motor........

  8. You could use the AW11 gearbox, as essentially it's the same gearbox found behind 4AGE when fitted to AE82 Corollas. But they have a different linkage setup so the shift cables are on the front of the gearbox, better suited to the mid layout of the MR2. You could get the correct linkage and convert a AW11 box. But there is no point as Corolla gearboxes are quite common, well they are in Australia. MR2 gearboxes however aren't, so I were you, I'd sell/swap the MR2 box for a Corolla one.

In short, it'll bolt up, but your linkages are on the wrong side, so your shift cables won't reach.

You could fit the 6 speed in there, but you'd need to cut even more. Without all the fat that is a Corolla you don't need 6 speeds. It'd be nice, but losing 200kg just by being in a EP shell really wakes the 4AGE up.

    th_IMG_4060.jpg

    th_IMG_4059.jpg

Gratuitous pics of mine, not quite as neat as the race car......

  9. You probably want to use the Corolla type C series box, as the shift linkages are already set up for fwd, Otherwise you'll have to muck around and convert your mr2 stuff. Physically they are the same, so long as you are talking about the NA AW11. The supercharged gearbox is a much beefier beast.

I ended up using a 1999 Corolla c52 gearbox with a 4.06 diff ratio. I used this box as it already has the holes drilled and tapped like a Starlet gearbox to suit the front left gearbox mount. I could really use a 4.3 as most roads are too short to really get up it (2nd goes to 115kmh)

  10. sorry for more questions but what coilovers are they?

and how have you found the 17s for racing, is there a specific reason you chose that size?

do you have any more suspension mods ?

They are Cusco Zero2's, they have about 65mm total travel, 5 damper settings, 6k front, 4k rear, they ride pretty good for a all out coilover. I'd like some bilstiens for daily duties, but thats more money....

I know a smaller size wheel is probably more fitting for a Starlet, but they were kinda cheap, and they look awesome.

They are Magline something or others in a 17 x 7 wearing Toyo T1-R in a 205/40/17, haven't really reached the limits of these yet as I haven't driven it too hard yet.

I'd like to lower it more but that will have to wait till I get a panhard rod.

I scored a EP82 front strut brace from a mates car that was rolled, have disc rear to go in too.

Ahh, i see you've gone for the silvertop if i am not mistaken... Nice project you got there. I'm undergoing the blacktop 4age not long from now, was wondering where you got your trumpets from? I hear the 20v ones are different to the 16v ones...

Are you still trying to revive your AE86 or is this the new toy?

    T

It certainly is a silvertop engine, going by the year markings it's a late 93 with the updated intake manifold. I got a blacktop computer from yahoo, this allows me to run MAP rather than the AFM, good move for sound and space. I got the trumpets off yahoo too, really nice CNC machined things they are, were 22000 yen if i remember correctly.

AE86 will eventually be put back to standard so I can sell it to some drift monkey with big dreams for lots of money. Money will go towards a luxo barge with a tow kit so i can start the next stage of Starlet mods. Don't tell anyone but I'm thinking of throwing some boost at it and see what happens.

  11. Hi kids

My names Dan, I wreck Toyotas for a living, so it was only fitting that I create a vehicle to showcase some of my "talents"

This all started in February this year when my AE86 sporting a 4A-GZE decided to catch a cold and miss and splutter constantly, not being able to chase down the problem, and with my spare car on loan to my girlfriend (she's got a EP82 GT, engine was dead at the time) I bought a EP91 to run around in.

A boring Australian spec Starlet, no power anything, unpainted bumpers, not even hubcaps.

Looked like this, yes the stickers came with it.

    th_IMG_1663.jpgth_IMG_1664.jpg

I find out my mates are going to the track, so it's off to yahoo auctions to bag some coilovers for track day, also got some 17s and new tyres as the 13 inch steelies weren't going to cut it. A quick strip of the rear half shed a few kilos, add a monster recaro knockoff seat with headbangers, and we are ready to go racing!

2 minutes flat around Winton. The slowest car down the straight, but I didn't do the slowest lap ;)

We have a dyno day, 43.4 kw at the wheels.

Between April and August not much is done to the car, servicing, put fuel in, Glanza S dash, Paseo EL44 drivers seat, CD player. Nothing really extraordinary. But I've been collecting bits and scouring the internet about putting a 4A-GE into a E chassis, been done, but no-one wants to say exactly what needs to be done. There's a guy in New South Wales racing one in IPRA, but bored and stroked to 1.9 litres. I want one, so I'm on the Yahoo auctions again, buying bits and pieces for my conversion.

Come August and I've collected enough stuff to put a 4A-GE 20v into the little Starlet, the last two weeks of 4E-FE power were spent mostly on limiter and flat changing :p

The Monday after I pull the motor out, my friends tell me they've organised another track day, in 6 weeks :)

So for 5 weekends and one week off work is was building my car to make it back to the track with 5 mins to spare, really 5 mins, when I have more time I might write about it in vague detail.

I haven't taken pics of the completed engine bay, I didn't end up running open trumpets as the race shop was closed when I went to get some filter socks. I slashed 8 seconds off my previous best time, and only ran a handful of laps as the wheel bearing was already crying on the way to the track.

It's weird watching the tacho needle stop and hearing the revs continue to rise B)

  12. Hi everyone in the YOO KAY.

My name is Dan, and I've just completed a silvertop into my EP91.

I won't give away exactly what you need to do, as no-one would tell me.

But I'll give you a few hints and leads.

You need to cut one of the chassis rails to get it to fit. You will not get it in there without cutting.

If you cut right side, you won't need custom driveshafts, BUT I think the chassis is severly weakened and needs some major reconstruction.

Cut left side for gearbox clearance and you will need custom shafts.

    I cut left side ;)
