Oil Pressure problems HELP!

Recommended Posts

Noticed on sunday that my defi oil pressure gauge was bouncing and not going up and down how it usually does. When i start up from cold it use to go staight to 4bar and now it stays at on 0bar for 4secs then goes up. When warm it usually sits just under 2bar but now its round 1bar. I pulled up in traffic yesterday and it dropped to 0bar and dash light came on as i saw that i was about to turn it straight off then all of a sudden the dash light went out and the needle went up on the gauge.

This is starting to worry me ive spoke to my engine builder and he said to get a mechanical gauge to check the pressure. spoke to other people and they have said sticky oil pressure relise valve, pump, oil pick up and also my mate had a problem like this and it was down to a faulty oil filter.

Can any one help or advise ?

unfortunatly, im a pro at starlet oil problems.... lol

get the sump off and check the pressure release, its near the oil pump and looks like a long nut in the bottom of the block. it just unscrews.

check that to see if its sticking open. if it is, take it off and soak it in petrol overnight. it should unclog it pretty well.

i doubt its the pick up. youd have to have some stodgey shit in your engine over a LONG period of time to block that. and your engine hasnt even got 10k on it and is well looked after.

if thats fine, check the actual pulley to see if its loose and slipping, mine did it a few weeks ago. and if you dont catch it intime itll shag the pump and youll get no oil pressure.

  • 1 month later...

Also if youre running a digital gauge, the sendor unit might have crud around it.Take the sendor out and give it a clean off and refit.

Mine does this every few months so i usually chuck fresh oil in at the same time, as im taking a reading from a sandwich plate.

Check that before you whip the sump off because it might save you a bit of time.

Digital gauges can be a bit on the touchy side, if the probe gets any shit near it.

Mechanical gauges are the most reliable, but saying that, you wont get as accurate reading as you would with a digital gauge like the defi's..

Give it a try if you havent sorted it yet.
