Steering Assignment - Pain In The Arse..

Recommended Posts

Okay, for college I have to get a sodding steering assignment done. I have already done one task on describing how the power assisted steering works, and I can complete the 3rd task on understeer vs. oversteer (peice of piss, driftworks forum for pictures methinks..) and I am completely stumped on the 2nd task.

The task itself is written by Edexcel and goes like this :

Distinguish between understeer, oversteer and neutral steering characteristics, vehicle roll axis, roll centre and centre of gravity.

The bit i'm struggling to remember, and find on the net, is the part about Vehicle Roll Axis, Roll Centre and Centre Of Gravity.

Can anyone shed some light on the situation and briefly explain it to me?

Not asking you to do the whole assignment for me, just so I get the idea of it and can then go from there.

Cheers :D

Something to do with how far on its roll axis before vehicle will flip over.

Apparently the old routemaster bus will not roll on its axis to exceed its center of gravity.

Dont know if its worth looking into test center, skid pan websites.

Hope this is useful.

We are doing something very similar in uni at the mo.

Our lecturer is obsessed with people being very vague about understeer/oversteer and the fact that if a car looks like its oversteering it may not be.

I cant help you though because we just sit there all looking blank while he waffles on, do have some good notes though but dont know if they would be any use.
