Master Brake Cylinder

Recommended Posts

Hi,

My ep82s brakes have been playing up for a while and apparently it is the master brake cylinder that is causing the problem.

The mechanic suggested I look in the back of Max Power for any brake specialists that can build an uprated master brake cylinder, so upon buying it i discover 0 brake specialists in the magazine, so does anyone know where I may be able to get an uprated one? (or failing that a standard one that can actually do the job!)

Cheers

toyota?, Jay?, back of a real car mag? TGTT.com Trader Section?

not sure why you'd been an up-rated one, what exacly did your machanic say it was or wasn't doing propperly?

The mechanic told me that an uprated one would be cheaper than the price i'd have to pay toyota for a standard one.

Apparently the master brake cylinder isnt releasing the pressure as it should be, which causes the pads to rub lightly until the discs get hotter and hotter until the brakes are fully on when i have to stop and wait 20 mins for them to cool down! It has just got through a set of drilled and grooved discs and racing pads in a month and a half with normal braking!!!

Who is Jay and will he be able to make an uprated cylinder or get a standard one for a decent price?

Any help would be appreciated

 uprated master cylinder

Not being funny but have you checked the obvious... Bleeding the brake system? It sounds more like you have trapped air and its causing the brakes to be pressurised.

Have a look in our trading section, under Jays Garage.. He will be able to sort you out if it appears your master cylinder is faulty

none of this uprated nonsense lol

Hi, yes the brake system has been bled - it wouldnt bleed the normal way (could pump the brake pedal for hours without any fluid coming out at all, and yes it was done properly) so had to be vaccuum bled.

Ragger's right, it's very rare for the master cylinder to fail on the EP82 so it's worth doublechecking everything first. Usual issues are sticking brake caliper pistons and sliders but from your description it sounds like both front brakes are sticking (?)

If so I would recommend rebleeding the system before replacing the cylinder itself. I should have a secondhand one here if you need it.

Hope that helps,

Jay

The calipers have been thoroughly cleaned and copper grease used where appropriate. And its all 4 brakes that are sticking, although the front left is by far the worst.

I've already done:

braided brake hoses

new discs and pads all round

bled brake system

cleaned up calipers

Anything else I can try before replacing the master cylinder?

How did you bleed the brakes out of curiosity ?

It could take a fair few goes bleeding the brakes to get them working.. save some cash and keep trying that.

Very rarely does the master cylinder go on them mate.

If youve done it a few times and still nothing, then there really isnt any thing else left to check in the system. If its not air trapped...

And your sure the calipers are greased and the pistons move freely, it can only be the cylinder i suppose.

The mechanic basically used a tube and a half empty bottle of brake fluid, kept pressing the brake pedal to force any air out. starting with the ones furthest away from the brake reservoir. And he kept doing it until there were no more air bubbles.

So should i just try replacing the cylinder, or is there anything left to try???
