How do i remove the the crank gear?

I knew when i was going to take the crank out that i would need to remove the crank gear, how exactly do you get it off, i noticed that there is a little metal bit sticking out the side which i am guessing has somthing to do with it as shown here

Its the bottom gear with that metal piece sticking out, can someone explain what i need to do, i havent tried anything my self yet as i dont want to damage it.

It should just slide off. But will most likely be grown on there and take a bit of shit to get it off.

ah right ok, so the gear should slide over the key thing, should i just wedge somthing behind the gear and whack it off?

i gently prysed mine off with a small crowbar took 20 mins piece of crap lol
