Taggy Posted March 13, 2012 Posted March 13, 2012 If i change my piston rings in a complete engine which is the best way to do it, the engine will be out, but should i take the head off and push them out the bottom. Or should i just take out the crank its self and remove them from the bottom, saving my self having to remove the head and buy new head bolts and head gasket which will save me not far off £200?What you think? Asad Posted March 13, 2012 Posted March 13, 2012 how will you compress the rings from the bottom, when putting the pistons in?also dont the bores need honing for the rings to bed into? Quote
Ryan-11 Posted March 13, 2012 Posted March 13, 2012 from what i can remember the pistons can only come out from the top so looks like the head will have to come off Quote
Asad Posted March 13, 2012 Posted March 13, 2012 you can knock them down ^as far as im aware they are only ever put in through the top with a ring compressor, how you`d do this from the bottom is beyond me lol Quote
Taggy Posted March 13, 2012 Author Posted March 13, 2012 Thanks Asad, thats the bit i wasnt sure on oh well thats that one miffed then, turns out changing just the rings isnt as cheap as i thought!Piston rings x 4 - £105.66Head gasket - £42.83Head bolts - £56.99 Quote
ToyotaTech15 Posted March 13, 2012 Posted March 13, 2012 Hi Taggy,Where did you get your price quotes for replacement parts?I may be able to supply parts cheaper than you have been quoted.PM me details if you would like a quote.RegardsGary Quote
Flaminsam Posted March 13, 2012 Posted March 13, 2012 personally head off taggy. it makes life easier when re gapping the rings and honing the bore. ive heard of people doing them from underneath on other engines but its not really worth it. do it once and do it right Quote
conz1 Posted March 13, 2012 Posted March 13, 2012 I read somewhere can't remember where but I think you can take them out from the bottom but you have to put them in from the top . Like asad said . Quote
mech5107 Posted March 13, 2012 Posted March 13, 2012 Aren't you going to swap to 5e? Leave it this way and go on with the 5e. Quote
