supraruss
Good evening, Our 1998 S Reg Starlet has developed a fault which seems to cause issues when the engine is cold - loss of power but only for a few minutes and engine light comes on. Have checked diagnostics and getting code 22. I think this means my coolant temperature sensor has gone so ordered a new one and was sent something that doesn't look anything like what I think is the coolant temp. sensor. My question is, can someone please confirm if the picture shown is actually my coolant temp sensor or am I being stupid and pulling out the wrong sensor? If I'm correct, can someone advise best place to get one as most I look at online tend to look different to this one. Thanks very muchRuss http://opa.cig2.canon-europe.com/s/m/HGuAzaifXaV
Starlet_15
That is def your coolant temp sensor. I am also getting code 22 when the engine is cold. I replaced the sensor and it made no difference so far. I'm gonna try to wipe the code by disconnecting the batt. If that doesn't work then it's a wiring fault somewhere in the car. Be aware there are 2 different sensors. When I ordered one from Toyota they sent me the wrong one first so I had to return it and reorderDavy
rob_bower
That isn't a coolant temp sensor that is a fan switch. The coolant temp sensor is either (depending on the cross over) a green 2 Pin or a grey 3 pin triangular one. If its the green 2 pin then there is a 2nd sensor wich has a spade type terminal. My 99 sr had the triangular 3 pin. To wipe the error codes remove the ecu fuse for 20-30 mins. Hth
Starlet_15
If this isn't the coolant temp sensor then I must have replaced the wrong thing. Where is the sensor located???
dawniegirl
Good evening, Thanks for the postings as I am having identical problems with my 97 Starlet Life here in Oz. The mechanics have been in touch with the local Toyota spare parts dealer who keeps sending the 2-pin plug and even the auto electrician has had the run around. My Starlet has had the Code 22 cleared several times but the MIL is now constantly on, the temperature gauge isn't working, and the car starts like it needs a manual choke. I have the triangular 3-pin plug on the sensor but the guy at Toyota spare parts is adamant that only the green two-pin plug is the correct part, even suggesting that the motor has been swapped at some stage (it hasn't). Does anyone have a photo or part number for the three-pin sensor so that I can get the correct part? Many thanks Dawn
jimmymac101
If you need a three pin temp sensor I can give you a website and product code but they are an American Company as no one in the uk stocks/ supplies a 3pin sensor I will drag out the delivery sheet with details on later if that's any help ! I had this same prop on my 98 GLS NA, took me around 3months to source the correct part ........ Even went to toyota and they couldn't promise it would be the right part but wanted £90 anyways ! Idrees
We can get the correct part, we may even have it in stock. If you PM me your vehicle registration I'll see what we can do.
