I have a 5efhe with 4e sump and gurdel and oil light flickers on when it feels like an sometimes on idle

Oil pressure switch? Check oil level and wiring to it

The relief valve just bleeds off excess pressure.

It will be the pressure switch as YT said, its a common fault.

Sort the OPS sooner rather than later, that's what nackered my first engine.

The oil pressure switch has no bearing on the engine what so ever, the only thing it does is activate the low oil pressure light on the dash once a preset pressure is reached by the sensor.
