sam_turbs
ive got smoke comin out my exhaust but my dads mate said the turbo is fine but it has smoked for ages now it also leaves like a black waterey muck behind the exhaust on the floor. my big ends have gone on the car could this be the reason for the smoke before because they were wearing or isit the turbo oil seals?cheers sam_turbs
Stevie B
colour of smoke?
StarletRick
if its constant smoke, its probably the valve seals. the smoke will be blueishif it is only on decelleration (ie slowing down for a corner/roundabout) then its probably the turbo seals. if its blue its the impellor side, if its white its the exhaust side. my turbo lasted about 3 months when the seals went.take the pipe off the turbo and give it a wipe. see how much oil is in there. dont panic if there is a coating, but if its dripping out then you have a problem. StarletRick
it could be a minor leak on the turbo mate. it wont harm it unless it gets really bad and it dies (like mine did).i would consider looking for a replacement soonish though. because if it goes it will go suddenly. StarletRick
getting it overhaused would cost 300 odd quid i recon. easier to get a ready refurbished one. just keep your eyes open for them. one will pop uptry to keep your eyes out for a CT9b turbo. it spools up a little faster than the ct9 on the older starlets like yours. so itll be a slight performance increase too. sam_turbs
nice one so how long would it last when i get a new one?i was thinking of goin for the one on the tong turbos the ct9 a is that a good idea?
StarletRick
i personally wouldnt. but thats me. i do not like hybrids, i think theyre shit. and it would last as long as you look after it. warm it up, cool it down, dont overboost it. etc turbos dont die, they are killed, remember that. Glanza_Ragger
so you would go for the ct9b?i used to warm her up and cool down so it should be ok isn't it?they should last for ever then?If you have a turbo timer or just let it idle for a few mins after a hard run..And dont run the turbo to pressures it cant handle, then itll last a long time.If its oily, white smoke constantly on idle, but it dissapears as soon as you drive it, it'll probably be turbo oil seals.Pop the intercooler pipes off and check for thick oil residue inside.I personally run a hybrid ct9 and im very happy with it, there immense if you dont plan on building an uber drag spec starbo ;)If you have a gt, and dont want to fork out for a hybrid , go for a ct9b.Has extra fin on the impellor so it'll boost faster, not that youll notice it though lolHave a poke around on ebay. They came on glanzas to make up for the extra weight over the gt
