Starletraje Posted February 9, 2008 Posted February 9, 2008 Ever since i got my starlet its had a problem with rear brakes, they haven't been able to get a grip on the drum.Last weekend i changed the shoes for new ones and tightened the whole setup.still to no avail, i can apply the handbrake, put it in first and pull away quite easily, and the wheels turn.the handbrake is also unable to lock (or even slow) the wheels when the car is in motion.does anyone have ANY useful advice on this problem,if further information is needed just ask. Guest Enzo Posted February 9, 2008 Posted February 9, 2008 how much travel are you getting on the hand brake, have you tried titening the cable up? Quote
Starletraje Posted February 10, 2008 Author Posted February 10, 2008 Yeah, it used to lift about 10 notches, give or take a few, now it only lifts at most 5.still doesnt grip though Quote
steviet Posted February 10, 2008 Posted February 10, 2008 check the drum for wear,if ok it could be h/b cables that you need mate, could be stretched Quote
Starletraje Posted February 13, 2008 Author Posted February 13, 2008 There is plenty of tension in the cable, yet the shoes still don't grip the drum, you can hear a scraping noise when the handbrake is applied in motion Quote

Starletraje Posted February 16, 2008 Author Posted February 16, 2008 Well a miracle has occured and it is a sunny day in scotland, im gonna go take the brakes to bits and get some photo's posted. Quote
Starletraje Posted February 16, 2008 Author Posted February 16, 2008 Problem Solved,50% credit to Starlet SR.Loosened up the nut next to the lever and hear a huge ping noise.crapped myself cause i thought that the cable had either snapped or come off.Turns out it hadn't, the nut had just seized in place, hence why i was unable to tighten it any further.i Re-Tightened the nut back up, put the drums back together and took it on its first handbrake turn (not that its gonna be a common occurance)So after all this it was something simple...Thanks to everyone for there help Quote
