faulty torque converter or gearbox?

hello all,

i have recently had the box and converter off the car.

before removal everything worked sound.

wheni had the converter off alot of ATF spilled out.

Since the box has been back on it will not engage gear.

i read fluid has a massive impact on this setup and have tried to fill it up today however still no drive/reverse??

have i knackered something by idling the engine with minimum fluid in the gb and tc?

any info is grand, i dont have much experience with autos - cheers

bit more on this;

ive had the gearbox and TC off the engine.

there is no damage to the splines or anything obvious in that respect.

i did notice that what ever gear i put the box in i am able to spin the driveshafts - that to me doesnt seem normal?
