The car doesn't have to have been crashed. It just means that repair costs outweigh the costs of just writing it off. It is a lot more complicated than that really but it is all due to costs and the insurance company. For example one of my old cars was a write off but all that had happened was someone had popped the window and sliced all the seats and gone at the dash with a knife.
