Description: 96 P reg Glanza V, in black, auto box. It was a very well known car on the UKStarlets forum, I bought it just under two years ago and I can safely say it's been (by far) the best car I have ever owned. The only reason I'm selling is due to needing a bigger, more practical (aka boring) car now that I have a family.

Apart from breaking down on the day I moved house last year, it's been 100% reliable and an absolute dream to own. It was a fairly major breakdown, and I spent just under 2k on some serious rebuilding and re-engineering to get it back to full health. The work was done by Quest Motorsport in Essex who have done quite a lot of work on some of the local Glanzas; they are well known for the quality of their work. No expense was spared on the original build or during my ownership/the previous ownership of this car, it's had an insane amount of money lavished on it but at least you'll know you're getting one of the best if you decide to take it off my hands!

This may sound ridiculous with a car like this, but I NEVER thrash or abuse it. Obviously I put my foot down occasionally, as anyone would with a car like this, but I never redline it or race/track it. It's my daily driver and I'm mid thirties, wife and young son, respectable job, mortgage etc, so I don't drive it like a boy racer. If anything, a car of this spec and power is wasted on someone like me!

It's a genuinely great all round car to live with as a daily - the boot is suprisingly big for a small car (three times the size of a Lupo/Arosa boot), can easily carry three adults and a baby seat, it's even reasonably economical to drive if you keep it off boost - I can get about 300 miles out of a tank (£40 from empty) and I have always used V-Power Nitro+

Hardly anything has changed during my 2 year ownership from when I bought it, so the text below is lifted from the original for sale advert. I have all the details of the work carried out at Quest if anyone would like to see it.

I paid £5550 in September 2013, I've put well over £2000 into it during my ownership just on maintanence! So I'm looking for £5000 which I think is very reasonable, given the spec. Have a look on the Starlet/Glanza forums - you won't find anything anywhere near as good as mine for that money, so I won't entertain any offers for less. I would describe the condition as very good - the bodywork is completely solid and rust free but there are a few dents/parking marks/scratches/stone chips etc.

I forgot to mention regarding the auto... don't let it put you off! I'd never owned an auto before this and I was a bit reticent when I found out, but after 2 years of ownership I wouldn't have it any other way! It's the ultimate in lazy performance motoring, just sit back and let it drive itself! Obviously if you plan to track it (or drive it properly) then you might want to convert to manual. It's a quick and easy job if you know what you're doing, Tuning Developments quoted me around £300 to supply and fit everything needed.

Alpine head unit and 4" JBL dash speakers, Viper Cat 1 alarm/immob.

  2. Also forgot to mention I was hoping to have the car somewhere near done this year however with moving house I'm not going to have much time to work on the car :( however I'm not really worried as i wouldn't use it till the summer anyway, got a a lot to do to the house and the workshop!

How she's sat at the moment :)

what is that lip? I need a new one for mine and I like the look of ^ that.

  3. here is the report I got back from Quest Motorsport today, have a read...

"Received car in a non running condition. On trying to start the car it was very apparent that there was a compression problem.

    1. carry out compression test , found pressure of 45 , 0 , 60 , 150 psi respectively from cylinder 1 on wards.

    2. carry out cylinder leakdown test to determine if the problem was head or block related , cylinder leakage was 75 , 100 , 70 , 20% respectively from cylinder 1.

    3. remove cylinder head , first observation head torque was no where near the 60 ft lbs specified by ARP. Once head was off it was also noted that some of the head bolt washers where in correctly fitted.

The no 5 inlet valve was stuck wide open causing the zero psi compression reading on cylinder2, the valve closed when tapped with the handle of a screw driver and did not appear to be bent.

    4. all valves removed and checked for damage non where bent or damaged , but the cam follower on the no5 inlet valve on cylinder2 would not come out freely and once removed it could be seen that the bore the cam follower travels in was damaged causing the valve to stick in a certain position, the damage could have been caused by a valve spring compressor. The damaged bore was cleaned up and checked that the follower moved freely in all positions with out sticking.

    5. all valves lapped in with minimal effort and vacuum checked for leakage on the bench , the head was re assembled with new valve guide seals and up rated valve springs, valve clearances were then checked , it was found all inlet valves had minimal clearance of less than .002" , all exhaust valves except 1 were below bottom limit clearance.

All valves re shimmed to give top limit clearance.

    6. cylinder head re installed with new gasket after a leakage test was carried out on the pistons half way down bores, this confirmed there was no by pass, head bolts re torqued to the correct 60 lbs ft in 3 stages , then repeat sequence before cam cover was replaced.New cam belt kit installed .

    7. Remove exhaust manifold as it had been blowing badly , this was refaced , also the poor quality of the manifold was addressed and all internal welds from the waste gate port and collector were dressed to removed break through and all restrictions, refit manifold. Prime oil circuits to turbo and internals ready for starting. start engine and run up to temperature, electric fan working ok . Road test car and check for any oil and water leaks. Dyno check car for boost control and AFR's, AFR's were acceptable across the rev range. it was not safe to carry out continuous dyno runs due to the poor lower gear box mount causing excessive engine movement.

Engine cold start and general running now very good , vehicle returned to customer."
  4. wow I've done really well with this thread haven't I? Had the car for just over a year and I've managed about 2 posts and zero photos, good work :)

I moved house about a month ago and after a year of totally faultless performance and reliability, the V decided it was time to die... on moving day, on the way to collect the keys for the new crib. perfect timing. I left my house, started fine, driving as normal, got to a roundabout and pulled away when it suddenly lost all power and started spluttering. pulled over, just about ticking over, engine rocking like crazy, turned it off, wouldn't start again. sat and waited for over 11 hours to be picked up by HIC rescue, who eventually cancelled my rescue and told me to get a taxi home and try again in the morning (but that's another story for another day)

I trailered the car to Quest Motorsport on Matt Heard's recommendation. they had the car for a few weeks as it turned out to be quite a major job. I'll post up full details of the rebuild when Keith emails them to me, but let's just say the guys at Quest found a few 'questionable' bits and pieces which (I have to assume) were put into place by Tuning Developments when they did the forged build before my ownership (it's Iamlegend's old car).

https://www.facebook.com/119513264874/photos/pb.119513264874.-2207520000.1411589054./10152728380834875/?type=1&theater have a look at that link, valve shims reshaped and refitted after being skimmed with an angle grinder anyone? hmm. I know Iamlegend put about 5 grand into the forged build and to be honest it's been 100% reliable and brilliant for me for over a year... but to find something like that (and plenty more, details to follow) in a relatively new engine build makes you think. When I bought the car, everyone was raving about TD saying they are the best in the business and the only people to take a Glanza to for any work... now all I'm hearing is stories of fully forged engines failing after minimal time on the road.

more (and better) updates to follow, I'll try not to be so slack this year :)

  5. Broke down yesterday afternoon at 3pm, still sat with the car at 11pm last night when they decided to 'cancel' my recovery and tell me to try again tomorrow. Its getting fuel and a spark but won't start.I need to get it trailered to a garage but not sure where (its in Basildon) I rang ATSpeed in Rayleigh but they haven't got the diagnostics needed. Any suggestions for other specialist places in Essex? Thanks.

If I've posted this in the wrong place then could a mod please move it, thanks.

  6. took my Glanza in for it's MOT today and I've hit a few problems already...

    1) the horn hasn't been working for a while, I pre-warned the guy about it, he's had a look but can't find the problem.

    2) my back number plate fell off driving to the garage today, I need a replacement (smaller square rear plate) asap but can't find anyone in Southend area who does them

    3) the doesn't have a rear fog, he can't pass it without one. What are my options?

horn - any suggestions? is it a common problem?

plate - anyone know anywhere in southend/Essex or online who can make me a plate quickly?

fog - does it REALLY need one or should it take it elsewhere?

    Thanks people.

  7. what are my options for uploading photos on here? I have a Flickr account, is that any good? or do I have to use Photobucket?

also, are there any step by step guides for uploading pics anywhere? I've been on edition38 for about 7 years and I still struggle with uploading :(

  8. get some pics up..

haven't seen you about locally yet tho...

when your next out, let us know man..

where does everyone hang out? I went to lakeside last Saturday for a look around, hardly any cars out, pretty dead. unless I was in the wrong area?

is it black with pink 1.3 automatic on the back and did u get alarm fitted at pulse in hadleigh ?

yes mate, do you work near Pulse? the guys in there said someone came in and showed an interest, I'm guessing it was you!

how the hell have I not seen you dude ?

, glanzas kinda stick out like a sore thumb in Basildon where you go at the weekends ?

come lakeside with me and jay Saturday dude be good to meet another local lad

I'm hardly ever out in the car tbh, had a baby 2 weeks ago so I've been flat out being a dad! did pop to Lakeside last weekend but not much going on. you going this Saturday?

  9. apologies for the lack of updates or pics, I feel kind of slack as I've been super busy with family stuff, too much going on to wash it/get pics/do anything constructive... but rest assured I've been out there driving it and enjoying it! I'm not a flat out thrasher but I have an occasional reserved play and it never fails to amaze/scare me. good thorough detail next week, maybe a bit of paint and bodywork on the horizon too.
