  1. Ahh ok, the Starlet might be slightly different to the Paseo then.

Personally I think it's worth upgrading them as it's not a particularly big or expensive job to do. I'm not 100% if the locations are the same in the Starlet as the Paseo (I think the Starlet has at least one speaker under the dash?), but if there are front door ones then they're easy to get to. Rear ones might have some trim over but again, not a big problem to access.

  2. The plastic trim around the stereo and heater controls just pulls out - grab it at the very bottom and pull it gently, it should just unclip. Once it's off you will see some screws that are holding the old stereo bracket in place, just unscrew these and you can pull the old unit out.

I just screwed through the old bracket and in to some pre-tapped holes on the side of my new head unit. I seem to remember that you need an adaptor plug to convert the oem wiring to the standard stereo plugs, but I could be mistaken on that as it was about 4 years ago that I did mine!

Edit: think it's something like this that you will need - head unit should be plug and go from there.

Yeah I think my Sony stereo has one of those so should be okay. Ill give that a go, cheers!

Would you say its worth replacing the speakers? If they are not too much of a ball ache to get to?

  3. Hi all.

Just a quick question. Looking to swap my cassette stereo and replace it with a sony single din head unit so I have a usb plug in for my iphone & also a built in amp of 4X 55watt, which hopefully will liven up the sound a little bit.

How do I go about pulling out the standard stereo? I bought a facia off eBay http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/361474216924?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

I'm hoping this is all I need to get the new stereo in, and that I don't need to do any other work?

    Appreciate any help.

  4. Morning all. Just wondering if anyone has any alloy wheels in their garage etc just sat doing nothing that I could buy?

Not looking for anything aftermarket really, just some cheap alloys with decent tyres if possible (13" steel wheels are horrendous).

I live in Kent so would be great if someone was local, or willing to post.

    Many thanks

  5. I've not seen one in the flesh before I got mine

But lights the interior up a lot better and even better since I fitted smd bulbs ;-)

Very nice ;). Gonna be selling my little starlet in the new year if you know anyone that's looking for a gem of a car!

Owned for the last 15 years by a vicar lol :) perfect base for a engine/turbo conversion or just a little commuter.

  6. Under glove box. Theres a few plastic mushrooms that you pull off and a panel opens up and the filters drop out.

Not all eps have them though.

Oh and you can just wash them if youre a tight ass lol

Hmm will have to check as I just assumed I would have one lol, if I don't then I just wasted about £11 ☹ lol.

Sorry to spam buddy but does anyone know if you can get replacement filters for the roof mounted clean ace ?

That's okay mate, filters for the roof? That's a new one to me! Haha

  7. http://mearcatmini.blogspot.co.uk/

Not mine, but someone doing something similar. I'd say that's quite the project, and you might be in for quite the invoice if you can't carry out the work for yourself.

Had a quick read, I scrolled down pretty far, only to realise the most recent post was at the top :\ lol. Yeah I imagine the bill will be a lot, but that's just part of it because I don't have welding/fab experience and want to know the mini (that will be my daily drive) is safe and not bodged haha.

Depends if you wanna spend the money on it bud. I'd say it's definitely worth the money on these little cars mate. So much fun. But I'd do handling before power bud that's what I've done:)

If I get the go ahead that a subframe can be bought/made to house this engine then I have no doubt I will go for it. If people have managed to fit a b18 into a classic round nose mini, surely a 1.3 efe with a little turbo can squeeze in! :).

If I do get the go ahead, the engine will be coming out the starlet at some point so I only see it being worth while getting it refreshed and have it all built before putting it into the mini so it doesn't have to come out again :). Lots and lots to think about I guess!

  8. I really do hope that my 4efe engine isn't too much hassle to put into a mini, as it doesn't seem too much to have a turbo put on! Don't want to start going too mad and buying parts without knowing it will fit in haha.

My little starlet has not missed a beat in the last 3 weeks and 1,000 miles odd that i've done, but with 115,000 miles on the clock would people say its still worth boosting? I saw on another thread that its worth re freshing the engine, but have no clue whatsoever how much that would cost!

I will be servicing it this weekend with new plugs, 5w30 millers oil and oil filter so i'm sure my starlet will love me for that :).

also for the last 15 years its been owned by a vicar, so i'd like to think it hasn't been ragged around everywhere but I guess you never know..

  9. Could ask them but me and my mate are fitting mine next month should be getting mapped after the new year bud and yeah 4efe :)

That deal is just for the emanage and mapping buddy

Nice mate, I imagine it would be like another £500, but at least for £1,000 odd it will all been done by the pros and no bodges lol. How comes you went for a CT9 turbo instead of a td04? What are those two turbos off of as well as i'm not sure how much they cost. Did you just buy your parts from someone breaking their 4efte?

  10. get a emanage blue wired in the 4efe loom and a remap thats it

for hardware just bolt it on if your not boosting to high weld bung to sump for oil return thats it

    turbo kit

    exhaust

then over time when money allowes buy

    4efte clutch/fly

    4efte thermostat housing

    complete 4efte intake system

its up to you how thurolly you want to go

I don't really have the knowledge to do it myself, so what sort of rough cost would I be looking at to buy the parts and pay someone to fit it all? I don't need massive power because the idea is that if my engine fits into a classic mini and I add a turbo, 130bhp would be more than enough for what I need, so no need to up the boost.

I used a turbo ignition system, ancillary loom, ECU when i turbo'd the 85, MAP, IAT & Knock sensors too. Also a standard FTE oil filter relocator. Had the sump modified for the oil return. 212mm paddle clutch kit & flywheel. Maybe more shit.

As ive said in loads of these threads there are loads of ways to go about turboing a 4EFE, just depends which way you wanna do it :)

The Emanage blue seems to be a great way to bypass messing with a whole loom (I dislike electrics lol) so it seems that would save a bit of money? As I said above its to go in a classic mini so no need to go over 160bhp at the very most!

What sort of bhp would I be looking at as a base line if I do the most simple turbo bolt on?

by the way thanks for all the replies, really appreciate the help and sounds a lot simpler than I thought it would be ( I was expecting to be told I'd need to replace internals etc ).

  11. Hi all. Just wondering what would be involved to turbo my 4EFE?

It wouldn't actually stay in my starlet, but would be the engine I choose to put in my classic mini which I will be getting in a few months, so was wondering what work would be involved to turbo it.

I'd upload some pictures but I'm not sure how you do it :\.

    Cheers

  12. Would be worth doing cambelt if its not already had one.

Was thinking it might be worth doing it, a cambelt change will not be far off writing off my car as I only paid £395.00 for her haha :). Standard 10w40 oil good for the starlet?

Since winter is almost here be aswell doing a coolant change aswell, 5L of Toyota red pre mixed and you'll be sorted.

Air filter will probably be full of sand, bees an shit so worth a change aswell.

Any ignition related issues then start looking at replacing HT leads as they break down over time.

But generally the N/a starlets are sound cars with not a lot to go wrong.

Then just your usual wear and tear parts, shock absorbers, brakes etc :)

Didn't think about a coolant change to be honest. She starts up instantly like a dog being asked if they want a walk! haha.

There really isn't anything to go wrong, I don't think I actually have power steering lol!

Thanks for your replies folks :)

  13. Hi everyone, just bought myself a Toyota starlet 1.3 (hold on to your seat!) and was wondering if anyone knows what the schedule is for services? Its currently got 112,000 miles on the clock and runs nicely.

It had been owned for the last 12 years by a vicar so I assume its been looked after lol. I don't mind doing a quick oil and spark plug change as parts are so cheap but was wondering if when bigger stuff might need doing as it didn't come with the service book :\.

    I appreciate any help!

    Many thanks
