  1. its been a while since I updated as Ive been running all over the place busy helping people out, but with the help of my good buddies Trevor and Robbo, ive acquired a few new toys!

you may have noticed my new thread in the resolved issues engine section:

'guide to making a starlet earth kit'

this thread will bring you upto date :

    http://www.toyotagtturbo.com/showthread.php?t=22585

that brings me up to this stage:

    781260146a8614299026l.jpg

all earthed up and looking particularly racey lol!

you might have noticed that the intercooler pipe appears to be wrapped in aluminium bubble wrap, and you'd be close! Trevor donated some of his waste (but very expensive might I add) Nimbus heat reflective sheet. This fancy material insulates whatever you enclose, from nasty heat soak. I noted trevors bay being relatively cool even though he was pasting the hell out of his mx5 track car, he has his manifold totally boxed in with this stuff and it works wonders. My issue was that the intercooler charge cooled pipe was getting cooked by the nearby manifold flange, to the point you could burn your hand if you touched the silicone. Now all the heat gets reflected away. My next task involves venting the hot air from the manifold area up and out! In case your wondering how the cable ties holding the sheet dont melt, I used stainless manifold ties!

im dead chuffed with my bay now. Its killing me not having all the looks outside, so the bay allows me to indulge in my urge for bling lol!

  2. I am indeed, I only do it part time as my porter cable shafts my wrist up (I have a pin in my right wrist and my hand goes numb for two days every time I detail a car lol)

the issue with these threads is that people look for different things. Some people judge a polish by simply the reflection it returns, some gauge by glossyness ie how 'white' the reflection is, others like myself seek the corrective properties of a polish such as swirl removal. my 'polish' offers no protection, rather is an abrasive finishing polish - Menzerna IPF106 'final finish'

ive diced with G3, Sonus Swirlbuster, Finesse it, etc, but keep coming back to Menz and their final finish and power gloss products. These strip layers of top coat away and leave behind a fresh unprotected surface. My own cars are TFR'd with snow via a water filter, then Clayed using Bilt Hamber 'autoclay' a lubeless clay. Next up comes polishing using my trusty porter cable with a DAS pad and final finish. The surface is then prepped with Swissol paint cleaner pre wax, then sealed with klasse all in one. I then use 3 coats of Best of Show, followed by a light seal of chemical Guys wet mirror finish. Ive yet to do a car that I havnt been impressed with using this combo

  3. As per the summer meet thread, I am indeed planning a meet in the Belfast area, and have confirmed that a member of North Belfast Traffic branch will be joining us for some light hearted banter, and will be available for driving tips, advice on how to deal with sticky situations that us modified drivers find ourselves in, and ***HOPEFULLY***

we will have a treat lined up in the form of one of the PSNI fast road cars, either the Evo, R32 or VR4. The idea being we get to see first hand what is out on the road, and why we need to keep excessive speed and dangerous driving on the track.

The double edged presence of the police will hopefully keep the young hoodrats away from the meet so we can have a mature enthusiasts meet without fear of having our parade p155ed on by unconsiderate hoods.

I also hope to take us to a location for a photoshoot with a very dramatic backdrop, all within the confines of the city.

I cannot stress. If you plan to act up, you WILL be told to knock it on the head, and I hope the site moderators present will act accordingly on the perpetrator.

But, aside from such seriousness - get voting! the sooner I know numbers and a set date, I can secure us a good wagon to look at!

    regards

    al

  4. Thankyou all for the really kind words, its very encouraging, and ill keep trying new, crazier, weird-er things to keep you all interested lol!

I was leaving for work the other morning (I drive a yaris daily) and I liked this angle so popped a quick shot for you all, I just like the way the light hit it in the morning!

    781260146a8514208516l.jpg

it catches the spokes of the sparco's quite nicely! plus you get the beautiful view of the duct tape keeping water from flooding the inside of the car! Bonus!

heres a few shots of the various gauges im fitting to keep a vague eye on her, the reason I say vague is its more of an adventure and if she goes the way of the trackstar... well... thats the price I pay for having so much kitten business going on lol!

    781260146a8514220001l.jpg

    781260146a8514224330l.jpg

I had to take two shots as the macro couldnt focus on all three simultaniously.

Trevor scored me some nimbus sheeting, and got my idle down another few hundred rpm, so my next job is to box up the area between tont of herhe TD04 flange and the cooler piping as its a scant few centimetres apart, and must be heating the cooled charge something shocking!

It was great to meet you mr nanglebadger sir! your a true gent!

you can borrow my helmet anytime, as long as you dont polish it in front of her lol! pardon the pun!

did you get many good pictures on Sunday?

  5. cheers for the warm welcome guys!

yeah im fairly oldskool, and as my girlfriend keeps reminding me, old too lol!

I tried to log back in using my old details but they must have been deleted due to inactivity. Can they be reinstated?

Ive mostly been away wasting time and money on a GT4, GTIR and mx3 V6 and 192 brake NA mr2, but never really went away as I never left the NI starlet scene, just hung about like a bad smell in a different car lol!

  6. I started on cleaning her shortly after,

it took 3 runs with near neat surface100 through the snow gun before it stopped dropping grime lol!

I followed up with a lighter citrus TFR to wind the concentration down, and rinsed with the filter on and air dried.

Next up came Farecla G3, followed by Menz IPF106 finishing compound.

im trying out some new Zaino Pro 5 polishes, and ill finish off with my good old faithful Swissvax Shield

  7. well folks, its a very emotional moment!

    TEH KITTEH LIVETH!

I fired her up last night once a few teething issues with the Inlet mani were solved, and re routed the intercooler piping.

She went this morning and had her downpipe made :p

ill stop typing before I get all soppy and show you the money!

Just rolled out and firing minus downpipe, I was so tense at this stage, I couldnt bear failure.

and after the tentative drive home hearing her chatter to her hearts content...

    781260146a8148876464l.jpg

treated her to this Addzest (Clarion) JDM MD/CD head unit last night

now to start building her up inside!

  8. Leak sorted!

I needed to blank one hole off that I missed, but lesson learned!

she's now sat on her wheels, suspension all set, but more importantly the charge air system is complete!

    781260146a8129747713l.jpg

    view from the underside:

    781260146a8129747871l.jpg

the turbo exits with a 90 right, then a 135, into a 51-63mm 90 reducer to fit the intercooler. I was unable to pipe straight from the turbo to the cooler as the bend was too acute and the cooler too close.

  9. In a last ditch bid to get to the Irish meet in the starlet, I set about finishing up the engine!

was nearly there till I filled the rad, and Im loosing water roung the back of the intake mani!!! grr!!!

feel sick as a dog, twas 3:37am, and my plans for sunday are now scuppered! ah well, at least I wont be risking damaging it lol!

  10. id been very busy of late detailling cars, and hadnt made much progress, but spurred on by my great TGTT friends Jay Chris Trev Weejohn RyanV etc, she's nearing stage two completion!!!

    Behold the TD04!!!

    781260146a8065819748l.jpg

    781260146a8065819643l.jpg

    781260146a8065819462l.jpg

This is her, circa 1.30 am this morning, after a heavy nights action with Wee John and Ryan!

Many thanks to Chris, who travelled down and fitted the clutch and flywheel, then fitted the gearbox, and also to Trevor for providing a starter motor!

We have the TD04, mani and lines fitted, and the inlet mani all re plumbed with samco, plus the injector rail now in a fetching blue!

We have found the RX7 FMIC to be an excellent but tight fit in the ep91 front bumper tray, the only downside being the 65mm outlets, i'll need a reducer to fit my 50mm charge air piping!

The TD04 is meshed with fresh Gauze, and I cant stress how tight the fit is running the mild mani.

Next step is to plumb the rad, mount it, then design and build a nice charge air route. Shame theres 2 hopes of having it ready for sunday, Bob hope and No hope lol!

Again thanks to everyone who has donated their precious time of late to get me on track!

  11. On the first run, I learned that with the High comp pistons, and even though I decompressed with the head gasket, that the rings wouldnt take much boost and quickly began to blow over, so the block has been out, a new one sourced, compression tested and fitted, this time running a GT gasket instead of the speedvision unit.

Im going straight to TD04, running an RX7 intercooler frontmounted to try and keep lag down, as the smaller RX unit is more than capable of efficiently chilling the charge, and yet not take huge volumes of air to pressurise.

The secondary injector loom is still wired, and the 'mi16' special ecu will be re-employed to control fuel and timing again. Im aiming for a meagre 0.8 bar, and can see no reason in it not working with Chris' very capable tune.

The car has become a bit of a slag, but that was more accidental than anything. The more I poked at the car, the more the interior disgusted me, as it was all milldew in the back, as it was laid up for ages, I intended to replace it with an ep91 glanza V interior, but as yet one has to turn up for breaking!

when the boot is shut the only visual give away is the C pillar brace, and the 'kitten inside' decal!

I can assure you the car as a whole, looks totally crap, and I guarantee you if you saw it on the road youd think 'ricer in an NA, being a wanna-be' The silly-big Super drager, and the fact its sat on its arse further compounds that notion. The car has been tastefully modified by having the crap beaten out of the drivers door, and a few tastey 'scabs' around the car in general.

The plan is to run this car for a bit, develop the engine, blow the smoke clean out of it, have a lot of fun, then buy a fantastically mint 'karat' ep95 shell in some shockingly crap colour =)

edit: ps, 5 doors for sure!

  12. here goes!

    How I love being back!

  13. saturday was a hoot lol!

we learnt huge amounts, mostly with afr and timing.

Boost is generated from virtually nowt, and yes, the stock ecu cannot deal with it.

Strangely the little ecu did a stirling job of fuel, with it not running dangerously lean till the point where positive boost came in.

Chris was down from early in the day preparing it for stage two: management!

we are near ready to go to the next step in fitting the piggy back, the stand alone injector loom is now in, and ready to go, all we need is a pulse back to the piggy and lift off should be imminant!

we need a good CT9 as my current one has been sat so long the seals are gone.

otherwise she is excellent! handling is go kart like, and stiff as a board, so so hard to believe she isnt the wallow-mallow that was the sportif stock spec. Im about to set up a standing order with the dentist for filling replacements!

Im really pleased with the super drager and exhaust system, pardon the pun but she purrs like a kitten and is probably the quietest aftermarket exhaust system ive ever heard! (in retrospect this was a brash statement!)

  14. so close now you can smell it!

cheers to Jay Trevor and Petey for hookin me up with these:

stay tuned for a serious dose of modification on saturday, its well worth checking back in for ;)

  15. tonight saw the addition of a few goodies.

The first coming courtesy of Lloyd, who having his new SSQV, relinquished his trusty Bailey Bov onto the kitten!

Nigel made up a handy little mounting bracket in his typical Blue Peter style from a power steering pump bottle mount, and a piece of stainless tube cut in two! Go ahead McGuyver!

    781260146a7380047024l.jpg

    781260146a7380047209l.jpg

When I got home, Taylor, the little boy next door came flying round with a big box containing my rallynuts delivery:

    an Omex Clubman Rev Limiter:

    781260146a7380047421l.jpg

    781260146a7380047612l.jpg

and a black Sparco Harness. I intend to fit plain black harness pads to keep it a bit stealthier.

    781260146a7380047783l.jpg

Good news also came in the form that I 'should' have my coilovers by the weekend, and the engine control method has been settled upon for definate. N.I. Groundbreaking 4efe mayhem abounds!
