I know how you feel mines taking a hell of a lot longer than I expected aswell
This will be something else though so fair play for keeping at it
Thanks man! Yeah it'll be worth it to see it finished again and at least I know its clean this time around not just packed with filler!

Well done for sticking with it, so much effort but it'll be worth it.
😂yeah they definitely pulled out all the stops for it! Yeah it'll defo be worth it once it's done!

**UPDATE 28/11/21**
Another weekend of finding more rot/dodgy repairs by the previous bodyshop. After pulling the rears apart I had to investigate the fronts and it was just as bad. Rotten folded metal folded against the "newer" metal. A shit load of filler and more woodscrews pulled off I got to see what I had to work with/repair.
Pictures speak a thousand words anyway
Wood screws through the original wing and in to the fibreglass skirt
and some fantastic "welding" hidden with a mixture of fibreglass/filler
anyway all 4 corners are fully stripped now so it's a matter of working out the best route to take with the repairs and to crack on! As it stands as I left today until next weekend 🤘

Shit the bed mate fair play to you. If you don't save her she will end up for parts like most others.
Yeah I'm in way too deep with it now to give up on a bit more rust 😂nevermind we'll see how it goes over winter!

Epic build! Hats off to you mate!!

**UPDATE 21/11/21**
Well tubbing the arches threw some problems/decisions to be made with the car. During welding because of the heat the filler on the arches cracked, I was expecting this which wasn't the issue the problem was once again down to the previous bodyshop who had done all the work. The rear arches had around an inch of filler on top of them which also followed up the whole of the rear quarters 🙄
Upon removing all of said filler I kept finding more and more problems. More rust, the original arch folded over against the new arches had started rusting the new ones, the original gt side trims had been screwed into the quarter panels with wood screws then just plastered with filler to hide them, and some awful welding also hidden by it all. Part of me at this point was thinking of selling up because I couldn't be bothered with even more work. But I've ordered a new arch for the one side and I'm going to buckle down and try and get it sorted over winter.
Few pics of the mess
This is how much filler/plastic/rot/woodscrews😂 was removed
Filler was literally slapped on everywhere
Going to aim to keep the shape of these metal arches as much as possible as they were blended in alot smoother before and I prefer the look of them like this! Busy few months for me ahead!

** UPDATE 15/05/21**
Bit slow since the last update due to various family issues/change in job and general lack of motivation due to covid, but finally sold the big old banded steels off the car and picked up some new wheels yesterday. I've dropped from a 16" to a 15" but stuck with the same width and offset as before. Much prefer the new wheels and obviously alot lighter!
Hoping to crack on with this over the next few weekends now and get somewhere with finishing tubbing the rear arches then it's a few final bits to the bodywork and paint 🤘🤘

Just had a good read through this!! Car looks awesome man! Definitely be getting myself some of that manifold paint to try too makes it look alot tider!

So pleased you updated this. Looks sick this thing, you just have to finish it!
Needs a bigger wing on the back too, to go with the hugely aggressive styling. 😉
Yeah I do wish I'd of been able to pick up the bootlid/wing it had on it when I collected it but it had already sold sadly!
Definitely something I'll be looking into once its all back road worthy!

**UPDATE 24/02/21**
So even though the shell has had arches welded on to it the bodyshop that did it decided rather than cut the original outer arch away and leave alot of clearance in the rear arches, they would instead just fill it with filler/fibreglass 🙄
As I've decided to do it properly this time round i spent the weekend cutting said arches to pieces to increase the amount of clearance I have in them. Its basically going to be a very basic arch tub of sorts but will mean I gain at least an inch and a half of tyre clearance so I keep the 8j on the rear at a zero offset.
Really glad I actually did it as suprise suprise just like the sills they had "fixed" they had just fillered over a rotten driver side arch as you can in some of the photos the different layers of rusty metal I was finding!
This is how the arches have always been... you can see the huge lip on the left of the photo and then the original arch has been pushed out to meet the metal over arches.
And thats how I left it off for the weekend, still needs tidying up but you can see the extra room/clearance ill now have once its all back together.
Drivers side was the same but uncovered all the rotten arch once I started cutting into it.

that looks awesome!
no way, i think the wheels look great, what type are they?
Thanks man! Its definitely nice to see it all in one piece again! The wheels do suit it very well but there's a few issues with them.
1 they're basically a fancy banded steel so the weight on them is ridiculous😂
2 because of the size of them and the fact the wide arches aren't just a hollow thin arch they scrub really badly on the front unless I run it at the height it is in those photos. Which is pretty high on the coilover settings, which brings me to my last point
3 it handles awfully on them 😂 i dont know if its the weight of them in general or a mixture of it being so high on the coilovers but it never felt planted when it was driven.
So I'm basically looking to drop to a lighter weight 15" still with some nice dish of some sort though or at least that's the plan
-
Realised half the photos of the build had disappeared due to stupid photobucket links so I've just spent the last hour re uploading them all 😂
Anyway..
** UPDATE 7/2/21**
One of my quadlights has always had a broken bracket, never really bothered me but it was never bolted on securely and this time round I've told myself I'm doing it all to a bit of a better standard. So I picked up a spare headlight but it needs the glass swapping, haven't got round to that bit yet but had it all bolted back up today and have fitted some better quick release bumper clips. Probably the first time in a good few years that its had all its panels/bumpers/lights on at once so I pulled it out of the unit for a little spin around the yard and to grab some photos. Rear bumper is needing some repair work due to a boost pipe popping off not long after I originally built it and destroying the bumper so excuse the scabby back end but though I'd update with some recent pics.
Anyway. Plan is to find some smaller wheels and shift these ones. The 16s have never worked properly due to the tire size etc and I don't particularly want to run a big stretch. So I'm looking to drop to a 15" and see how it goes from there as I can also drop it on its arse then too!

Super long shot I know but if anyone has a set they're willing to part with give me a shout!

Agree facebook has its place but the depth of the forums beats it hands down so there will always be a place for them shame more FB users don't contribute, in the last year been some good build threads pop up in the ep91 NA section aswell as the glanzas worth a look if it's been a while
Yeah no doubt! I logged onto tgtt for the first time in years the other day too and its the same there sadly!
Yeah ill be making my way through alot of these build threads over the next few days for sure!
-
Yeah it had gone alot quieter the last time I'd logged in to be fair! Shame really there's alot of knowledge amongst these forums and its usually the same old questions you see getting posted in the Facebook groups!
Thanks man hopefully be some good updates over the next few weeks/months
4 minutes ago, burty said:Still some of us around nowhere near how it used to be helpful bunch all the same it's the build threads that kept me around so il keep an eye on this one

Soooooooo... I have no idea if these forums even have the traffic they used too but after logging in for a nose I thought I'd put a little update 5 years down the line 😂
Car has been sat in my old unit for most of that time, with endless issue after issue which killed any love i had for the car... But recently moved to a new unit and I've been spending every free hour I've got over there getting it sorted and its finally playing ball!
Ive got a fair amount of body work to re sort on it and it'll be getting a proper paint job this time round as there's a booth next door to my unit 🤘
Maybe I'll get it to some events this year if we have any on!
-
Seems I've sorted it! Swapped with another throttle body I had hanging around and its dropped to 1600. Still a little high but the engine hasn't run in well over 12 months properly so I'm putting it down to that for now and we'll see how it goes
-
Right... so with the engine running and inter cooler pipe off if I block the throttle body it cuts out. If I block the little vacuum hole inside the bottom of the throttle body it cuts out. It's also pulling alot of vacuum through that hole which tells me theres no vacuum leak. So to try eliminate that hole as its in front of the butterfly I block the vacuum lines underneath the throttle body, both of them. The car still runs straight up to 2600k.
Even with those vacuum lines underneath blocked off I'm still getting vacuum pull through that little hole inside the TB so I'm guessing it pulls some from the other side of the butterfly theres not much I can do about that.
I know my inlet is sealed fully as I had it back off the other day to check and sealed it with sealant along with the gasket.
Only thing I can think of is something has failed inside the TB that's allowing air to get pulled through that hole when it shouldnt be. I've had the TB off and can't see anything obvious though so who knows. I'll try pick up another TB

High idle is surely a leak or some sort of " extra " air passing through the throttlebody. try and remove intercooler pipe and block the inlet with your hand. the car should stall. if not its a leak.
Give a quick check to your idle control valve too. might got jammed open
Yeah I've had the icv off and cleaned it will give the throttle body a good going over tomorrow too
Cheers for the suggestions 👍

You checked for vacuum leaks, but maybe theres a vacuum hose still unplugged? think of brake booster etc..
Yeah I've gone over everything like 20 times dude haha it's what I first assumed I'd done was leave one unplugged somewhere. Can't find anything.
-
Finally getting my hands back into sorting the gt and after fitting new fuel lines over the weekend I fired her up for the first time.... idle went straight to 3k 😂 I assumed vacuum leak so I had the inlet manifold back off as I'd recently removed it and assumed I'd left something. So that's all sealed back up cant see/feel any vacuum leaks whilst spraying carb cleaner around there with the engine running yet it still wont idle less than 2600 rpm.
The idle screw is wound all the way in and I've even disconnected the throttle cable so the throttle is as shut as it can be yet it still idles at that speed. Anyone got any ideas before I actually give up on the thing and strip it
-
just link the power cables from one to another shouldnt be too much of a problem obviously sender cables will need to be individual
-
Yeah I've seen this knocking about too!still got that steering rack too James??

**UPDATE 6/3/22**
Slow with the updates but finally got around to getting some fresh metal on the car this weekend. It's all a learning curve for me as I'm basically trying to teach myself to weld along the way too so alot of trial and error but I'm happy with how it's gone so far!
Couple more bits to finish welding up on the arch and plate up the filler cap then I'll be cutting the drivers side out to do the same so they're both identical. Ended up with a bit of warpage but ill sort that once the fuel filler is patched up
