Since converting my glanza from auto to manual I have had both front wheel bearings fail within 100 miles. Pretty certain they were fine before I did the conversion. Could this just be coincidence? I didn't torque up the hub nut after I did the conversion as I was just doing a few short road tests to see that everything was ok, I just tightened them with a battery gun and nipped them with a bar. Are wheel bearings a common failure item?

They have a torque setting for a reason, over tightening or under tightening will cause them to fail prematurely. They are usually good for 70/80k but I've seen them still going strong at 140/150.

Lots of things will change this though as lower offset and wider wheels will cause more stress to the bearings along with stiffer suspension.

They are cheap enough and an easy job with a press.

Ok thanks for the info,I have replaced the o/s one and shall be doing the n/s this weekend, just seemed a bit odd that they would fail within such a short space of doing the conversion.

Did you take the shafts out and move the car when doing the conversion?

Yes I did actually now you mention it. I had to tow it out of the garage so I could get the donor car in. Do you think that may have something to do with it?

yes the bearing is in two parts and they split once the cv is removed so that wouldn't of helped..
