When to use diagnostic mode?

Having issues to get the gt starting it's just had a head gasket done so does it need to be in diagnostic mode while setting crank timing ? Or only ignition timing ?

Check if you reconnected the ecu temperature sensor on the thermostat housing as the gt will almost not start with it connected
