Power window instalation

what i would like to know is

1 how well do these work

2 how does the motor know when to stop e.g if im bringing the windows up and i keep my finger on the button what happens does the motor go till it blows or breaks something?

or does it work like a gate opener system where one can progran the open and close position ?
