overboosting and a bit laggy!

Recommended Posts

hey everyone!!! i have just bought myself a glanza! unfortunately i am having a few problems with her!!! :D my partner has had a drive and an inspection and he says its overboosting wildly and it feels laggy!! he reckons there is a split boost pipe but i took it to a specialist and they said they fixed it! but unfortunatley its still doin this! also the engine management light comes on when it happens!!!

could anyone please shed some light on what could be the problem as its driving me mad :D

thankyou

well whats the spec of the car, are you running the standard ecu?

if you are over boosting on a standard ecu you must be hitting fuel cut?

but you haven't mentioned this, have you got a fcd (fuel cut defender)?

a split boost line would mean a lack of boost e.g. doesn't spool or does spool but really late like at 5k revs,

do you have the standard actuator or a uprated one?

it has standard ecu and actuator!! havent got a FCD....yet!! its on the cards! i have found out that she's boosting at 0.9 BAR!! which both my partner and my dad thinks is too high for a small engine on standard form!! the weird thing is it sort of 'coughs' just before boost and then the engine management light comes on! then if you turn the car off for a few mins she is alright again!?!?! its really weird!! will have a look into this then! why would i be getting fuel cut?? is it because of the high boost??

thanks

What the engine light comes on while you are boosting?

that sounds a lot like fuel cut to me... dont get a fcd it not the proper way to do things, save your money and get a emanage blue or a standalone ecu like the jam, blitz etc. or if you are not going to run alot of boost get a hks ot toytuning actuator and a rrfpr (rising rate fuel pressure regulator) take it to a rolling road and get it set up at 0.8 and leave it alone.

if it's boosting to 0.9 yes you are over boosting and probably hitting fuel cut or getting very close to it.

the engine management light comes on just before fuel cut it's like a last minute warning telling you to ease off a bit, when you turn off the ignition the engine light will go again. i would suggest putting the restrictor back in place.

have a look through here:

there is lots of info or go into the tech section and have a good poke around there is loads of stuff.

you dont need to worry your car is not doing anything it shouldnt... although it is boosting quite high, to fix this get an up rated actuator and lower the boost level or get a ebc (electronic boost controller)

wow!!!! you made that sound like its a really bad problem!! lol

my partner has had a look with his mechanic and they are reckoning that the actuator is knackered, its an aftermarket one because it only has one boost pipe to the actuator itself and the other is blanked off!! he nearly figured it out, even though the SR20DET is his speciality haha!!! he going to take the actuator off sometime at the beggining of the week and see if its KO'd or not!! and turn the boost down ..... again!!! :D i just want to make sure she is all ok before i start to tune her up a bit more!!! :D

sorry lol, it's nothing to worrie about and is definitely not to bad... just find away of being able to turn the boost down a tad, either get a new actuator (an after market one on the glanza's only has one port not two) or an ebc.

good luck with it though :D

Do you have a decat/ aftermarket exhaust fitted?? That would cause fuel cut in the cold weather. Turn the actuator down if it's an HKS one which it probably is and i bet it sorts the problem out.

Get an FCD if you wanna bugger the engine :D search that one :D

The spluttering then the engine management light comming on is fuel cut.Thats why when you turn ignition off and back on, the light is gone.

Also a give away its fuel cut because youre boosting to 0.9 with no form of management or fcd fitted.

As Paul said, FCD's are the quickest way to blow an engine up.Forget the idea and look into spending the extra money on a piggyback ecu.

If you dont know much about these engines, have a proper read up on them before you decide to bypass fuel cut and crank the boost up.

she has an aftermarket cat back exhaust system! the elbow and cat are standard though! the cold weather really doesnt help at all like! :D the actuator is definately aftermarket but dont know which one it is?!?!?! lol i sure the boys can figure it out! :D i was told by them that the cold weather will 'spike' the boost anyway so maybe its just that eh? whats standard boost on Glanza's???

thanks

Well it could be a HKS, JAM or ToyTuning, more than likely a HKS or TT item.

Take it you have a boost gauge? You will need to wind the actuator out a turn i.e make the arm longer to lower the boost a bit.

My GT is doing this atm sometimes overboost's in 2nd and cuts but normally its just when giving it some in 3rd 4th and 5th, I just feather the throttle when I see the boost creeping up and try to avoid hitting cut.

Then it seems to go into limp mode if you hit cut and feels sluggish high rpm but still shows alot of boost on the gauge, when it does this I just disconnect the battery and start it again and its fine.

As said if you want to run a FCD you will need to get a different FPR and get them both set up on the rollers otherwise BOOM.

Hope this helps

no boost gauge!!! :D i am getting one!! dont think i am getting a FCD! its a fresh import and has had quite a few things removed prior to being shipped over here!! theres sticky marks on the top of the dash where some gauges used to be and all the senders are still present so will be aesy to fit some more :D thanks again

So no boost gauge and you say it's boosting to 0.9 bar?? :)

How the chuff can you say that with no gauge???

The 3 lights on the dash mean next to nothing in the real world except showing that you are on boost!! :)

The exhaust will be causing it to cut in the colder air recently, You should feel it about to hit cut before it actually does it it will hesitate slightly then if you are a numpty and keep pushing it you get the bang of it cutting the fuel.

Get the basics sorted out before you go faffing around with upping the boost. :p

this thread has worried me slightly, im getting all the symptoms of fuel cut but i have an FCD fitted :)

i dont get the management light on though just a few stuters and a bang or back fire and then it goes. anybody got any clue?

As Paul said again lol

How do you know what boost its running if you have no boost gauge?

First thing, install one and figure out what its running.

Second thing, turn the boost down a tad below fuel cut.

Third thing, forget fcd's even exist :)

hey all! i'm Alex (Cristines other half) -she at work!

she not even thinking of getting a FCD!! :p and i am clever!! thats how i know what shes boosting to! :) .....nah we put a gauge on when she went back to Bradford where she got her from because of the same prob! but they reckoned they sorted it, but hey guess what they didnt! they turned the boost down from 1.1BAR to 0.9BAR!!! i still think this is too high for the lil Glanza! My Pulsar GTiR is only running 1.2BAR!!!! :p for now anyway haha! i am turning the boost down again either tonight or tomoro so we will let you know how we get on!! cheers for your help though people!!! maybe start tuning up the Glanza soon eh??

take it easy :p
