conz1
im a big fan of mountain biking if i was you check out some of the deals etc on this site:http://www.leisurelakesbikes.com/but if you want a bike to do most things and be reliable id look in to the specialized hardrocks they seem to tackle most things and there hardtail so you can get some nice pump on the jumps ;) and there not going to be super expensive.if you wait a while you can probably pick up an amazing bike for cheap when they sell there stock for the 2012 bikes to come in man. jham
yea hardrock seems to be top of my list there fetching good money even second hand, i definatly want a hardtail
conz1
you cant really go wrong with a specialized man see if you can pick up one cheap in a clearance sale or on pinkbike

The Toffinator
You really need to think about what Exactly you want to ride, When you mean jumps do you mean proper trails? ie sets of tight jumps? As you will struggle to get a bike you can do this and Cross country on, it just doesnt work, the geometry is completely wrong and there too big, and you need them WAY smaller to do jumps on! A decent bike for a bit of everything is a hardcore hardtail (Decent amount of travel, smallish frame with big seattubes so you can still pedal it about. You need to compromise on a few things, comfort and ease of riding for a while offroad it needs to be a proper size, with proper geometry (ie a good XC bike) But then this will not be any good for Proper jumps. To me it sounds like you need a decent XC/Allmountain Hardtail, with say 100 to 140mm of Front travel. And another thing, Specialized used to be good bikes, but the past few years they have been COMPLETELY off there game, and i wouldnt touch one with a bargepole. We almost laugh at people in the bike shop when they say "i have one of them really good bikes, one of them specialized things" LOLGet something like a Ghost,Giant,Merida,GT,Kona etc. if you find anything you like mate post it on here and i will tell you the ins and outs:)TT
jham
thanks for the advise, think you have awnserd by question entirely. No looking to do any hardcore jumping as in set up mud jumps.Just some nice trails with the odd jump alonf the way so i think a smaller framed hardtail is what im going to need. Ive been looking at Kona/GT and speacialize but now youve said that may stick with the Kona/gt
jimmymac101
i have a mongoose fireball and it does the job nicely for all areas to be honest and doesnt brake the bank to buy new:) worth a look i added better stuff over time but nothing major yet.
jham
i just missed out on a mongoose fireball i believe on ebay, was kind of put off because ive never seen mongoose as a serious make but the reviews ive read suggest otherwise
The Toffinator
No worries jham glad to help out. And yeh sounds like exactly what you need then, most hardtails with that sort of travel have relaxed enough geometry to do daft jumps when your mooching round woods etc.And yeh mongoose are a decent brand, seem to have had a few years worth of good bikes come out of them.Problem with specialized are they have a name for themselves, so they will always be popular, but there skimping out on Major details that the average buyer doesnt realize, IE own brand shocks, forks, cheap wheelsets with fancy paint etc. so it rides nice for a bit then it all starts going tits up!Shame as i used to own one... jham
think i might put a cheeky bid on this,http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/180714131049?ssP...984.m1438.l2649anyone know what its worth?
ryan33hks
I used to go out all the time, done a few races etc. Haven't been out for a while though. Have a Specialised Demo 8 downhill bike. Only advise i can give really is to put a lot of thought into what you'll be using it for, as its a alot of money to spend on something that's no good for what you want. I bought a Trek hardtail and sold it within weeks as it wasn't up to the job.
The Toffinator
Probably £250 mate if its in good nick, its old hat now.And yeh thats a good point ryan!
Glanza_cl
DMR, 24seven, Identity.... they would be my choices , Possible out of budget though.I used to dirt jump then had some crazy harsh fall! now keep it safe with street bmx
The Toffinator
Bit too extreme for General mounting biking as well:P and lol street bmx, surely its more dangerous gravel rash is not pleasant lol
Glanza_cl
i'd much prefer some rash from a small height Vs jumping a 13ft double coming off, putting my tooth through my lip, concussing myself and then getting a bike flip over and have the axle hit you on the back of the head .... Yeah the above might be a tad hardcore for starting out, Kona stuff isnt that bad and prices are pretty reasonable ;). i'd probably go for a big hit/full suspension for trails but i guess it depends how complex the trails are. The Toffinator
Lmao sounds like a typical severe trail riding incident, bike usually clouts you as you realize you just faceplanted solid mud
jham
im liking the look of Kona Shred at the moment, seems to be an ok beginer bike. COncerned it may be more for the dirt jumpting side of things. I do want to do some dirt jumps but looking more at downhil trails which have jumps rather then just jump tracks if that makes sense, not sure the bike will fit my needs
