4EFTE Conversion Shuld I?

Recommended Posts

Right, ever since going to the Kent meet and seeing a gt and a glanza move so quick ive desperatly wanted that speed. My urge for it was made even worse at the Trafford meet when i saw Dub se7en's conversion. I would save for a glanza or gt but i want to try this one out for myself. Plus for some reason i love the looks of my black SR more than a glanza.

I would love to make my SR into a 4EFTE. but im worried about the cost and the difficulty in doing it. I have a mechanic to hand to help but im still unsure.

Has anyone got any rough ideas on total cost including engine and what the hell would i need to do it besides the guts to do it.

My mate says it would be fantastic to have a sleeper that flies as quick as a glanza and everyday im even more tempted.:lol: ;) :D:lol::lol::lol::lol: ;) :D ;) :D

The engine is just a simple swap as im sure you would already know. The hardest parts is sorting out the wiring loom to fit the UK car. Best bet is to ask dub-7 as he has done it :D

Your probably looking at £1500 for the conversion maybe a bit more but again im not sure

Id say go for it mate if your happy with the SR

Good luck in the decisions and carrying out the project if you go ahead with it ;)

I Know what you mean about the engine. Ive read loads of old posts in this forum and TGTT and it seems pretty straight forward to do.I would just have to sort the wiring out. I would obviously need a front mount intercooler aswell due to me not having an air scoop plus it would be better for performance anyway.

Im still undecided though. Ive also got to think of insurance costs aswell.

Here is a list of what i think i need:

4EFTE (duurr)

Wiring loom

Front mount intercooler

Piping for the intercooler

Engine lift

I was also thinking i might aswell mod the engine whilst its out of the car so its easier to do. Im speaking here with no experience of turbo's. So if you know i need something else add it to my list. I know some stuff about them but i would need to learn more to do this.

:D:lol: ;) :D:lol::lol::lol::lol: ;) :D ;)

The conversion would be pretty easy a sit's been done a few times now.You have the problems of insuring the car as a conversion, many companies dont like it,then theres the issue of selling it in the future. The conversion would have a much smaller number of people who would buy it. Personally i would just buy a GT or Glanza but thats just me! ;)

I say go for it bro. In total its after costing me over 3000euro but its well worth it... ;) And I still have loads to add on. Don't forget you'll need proper suspension and new upgraded brakes to slow the horses down which will be a MUST...

Very good poin there martin ;)

Yes you would need 4efte ECU but all injectors and manifolds would come with the engine

Now i really wanna do it even more. The engine and the wiring i could probably do myself with some guided help incase i go wrong.

Which engine would be better to get.The GT one or the Glanza one. I know they are the same engine im just thinking of the wiring.Ive read in the many posts ive seen that the wiring for the glanza would be better for the SR.

Correct me if im wrong by the way as im just learning at the moment.

What FMIC could i use? Would i have to find one from another car and Mod it?

As for what engine to use they are exactly the same bu the ECU's differ on the glanza and GT but you are more likely to come across a GT breaking than a Glanza so just look out for a low mileage GT ;)

Not sure about fmic to be honest

You could always get a universal intercooler to start off with bro as you'll prob be stuck for funds at the start. Down the line then when your engine is broken In + you get some extra cash, you could always change to Blitz, HKS, Greedy etc...

The major thing is insurance, if you can afford it, do it.

Also, i don't think it'll cost £1500. About £1200 tops, you can get a decent engine for about £500!

See there is a good side to the argument as to why i should do it and shouldnt:

Should:

The experience

SLEEPER!!!

The knowledge id gain

The power

Id get to keep my SR

Shouldn't:

Cost

The effort in doing it

Undoing it when i sell it

Could just get a GT

Getting all the bits

I really want to do it though.I can imagin pulling up to some smart arse in a quick car and him/her laughing and me jus dusting him/her.

Does anyone have any idea on insurance cost. Im 21 with a years no claims.Been driving for 2.5 years never had a bump or a endorsement.

If I were in your shoes I'd do it, as visually theres not anything really to do, so the outside of your car is sorted ;)

(whereas with a GT you might still want to be spending money on visuals)

Having the turbo SR would make you so much more unique too :D

As eks said you can buy a cheap gt for about £1500, would that not give you everything you need for the conversion? then strip the rest of the bits you don't need and get some of the money back what you paid on the car. I think your sr would be a mint sleeper.

I Know it would be a mint sleeper wouldnt it!!! MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM Sleeeeeeepppeeeeerrrrr

I still need to look at insurance though. Any ideas on cost anyone

@Dub se7en what are you paying for the insurance?

Who are you with?

Age?

How many no claims?

Thanks

Im looking to buy a crashed GT for as little as possible and im gonna nick the engine and sell the salvagable bits.If anyone spots one give me a shout.Obviously the engine has to have survived the crash.

How much are you looking for it. Dam!!!! Just noticed you are in northan ireland. I think that would be a little too far to travel as id need a trailer and to talk my dad into letting me borow his car.

Im really getting into the idea of the conversion now.Im just waiting for some ideas on insurance.

There are 2 GT's in the for sale section, one is £1800 and the other £1500 i believe

Get the engine and other bits and bobs you need and sell the rest, that should pay for any labour charges for the conversion or even a bit of profit if you go DIY ;)

I Was actually thinking i might come out better off if i did this as id get qute a bit for all the parts if i got a really cheap GT.Im planning on doing as much as i can myself so im gonna save tons on labour.

The insurance isnt gonna be a killer neither.I used to pay £1450 for a 1.0l micra in my first year so i dont mind paying that little bit more.Im paying about £750-£800 now so im expecting it to be in the area of £1000 at the minimum.

It's always amusing when you accelerate from a 30 zone to NSL and leave the scrote in the corsa in your dust

I want to be able to do this. ;):D:lol::lol:. Shock to the chavs in corsas is gonna be the most fun thing!!!!

Right i now have a small update on this idea of mine.

I have been doing a lot of research for doing this as if m gonna do it i want it doing right. ive e mailed several companies based in the UK and abroad about the engine as im not suceeding in finding a GT or glanza that has been bumped and located in England. The best response i think so far is this one and its a full copy of the email received.

Hi James,

Thanks for your email and let me know that you are interested in the 4E-FTE engine. The 4E-FTE engines that I have stock now are from EP82 Starlet. But it will able to fit into your EP91 without any problem since you can reuse all the engine mounting and gear box mountings.

I’m not sure the mileage of those engines as they are not come in front cut form. But we will recondition the engine in order to make sure every thing is okay. So we will recondition the 4E-FTE engine before we supply to customers.

The EP82 4E-FTE engine package (reconditioned engine with all ancillaries and Plug & Play loom) is 1000GBP included the shipping cost to Southampton Port, you.K. I’ll check if the shipping cost is the same for send to your city – Manchester.

The engine package does included gear box, ECU, wiring and all ancillaries to run the engine. We will start run the engine first and take video for you before we pack it into the wooden box for shipping. You have to reuse your drive shafts as the engine package is not come with drive shafts.

The recondition included the following services and new parts:

a. Labour for disassemble and rebuild the engine.

b. Labour for clean all the engine components (internal & external)

c. Labour for make a set of “plug and play” wiring loom (provided you will send me your stock wiring loom by EMS courier service on your own cost)

d. Labour for painting the engine block and some other parts

e. Engineering cost for honing the cylinder walls (depend on the cylinder walls condition)

f. Change all the engine bearings to King Engine Bearings. This included main bearing, con rod bearing and thrust washer.

g. Change all the oil seals (crank shaft seals, cam shaft seals and valve seals)

h. Change all the oil rings

i. Change engine oil and filter

j. Change cylinder head gasket (Toyota Genuine Parts)

k. Changing all the air hoses and intercooler hoses to silicon hoses (blue colour and same quality with SAMCO)

We will hone all the cylinder liners, regrind all the valve seats, change some of the bucket shims and adjust the valve clearance so it can be within the specification. We also will clean and painting all the external parts of the engine so it will looks nice.

During recondition the engine, we need to make sure all the parts are okay. If any part (for example crank shaft) is not in good condition, we will change it. We can take detail (high resolution) photos for you and send to you via the SKYPE so you can know the condition of those internal parts. Please install the SKYPE and add me into your contact list.

After reconditioned, we will test the engine for at least 1 hour before we pack it into the wooden box. We will take video during the test process. You can see the idling rpm, the water temp, the charging level, the oil pressure, and so on from the cluster meters we use during the test run process.

We need you to send over (at your own cost) your car’s stock loom to us, then we will make a set of “Plug and Play” loom so you won’t headache about the wiring problem when installing the 4E-FTE engine into your car. Normally we charge customer 180GBP for making “Plug and Play” loom. To encourage you send over the loom to us, we won’t charge you any extra money for make the “plug and play” loom.

We even will discount £50 for you as a further encouragement for you. This means that we bear part of the courier fee for you to send over the loom to us. So you can see we are sincerely hoping that you will send us your stock loom. If your car is a daily driver and can not down for too long, you can send us your stock loom after you received the engine from us. I mean you can only send me your stock loom when you take out your stock engine from your car.

Many people think that it is simple to make a set of loom to run the engine. But when making it to be “plug and play”, no many people can make it. Actually we need to combine 2 set of looms to be 1. It will take at least 4 working days to finish and test the loom. There is some techniques need to know when doing this kind of loom.

Please be reminded that the engine package will only deliver to the nearest port to you. You have to pay the tax or import duty that may apply on it when you declare the engine package with you.K customs. Anyway, we will lower the shipping invoice value (for example 600USD amount) in order to help you save some tax. I think you should not get too much tax on the engine package as they will tax base on the shipping invoice value.

The whole shipping process will take about 1.5 to 2 months from the day we ship out the engine. We will not insure the engine as the insurance cover value will base on the value of the shipping invoice. So it is no point that we buy insurance to insure some things that is not the actual value. But don’t worry because we will responsible and make sure the engine safely deliver to the nearest port to you.

You need to arrange transportation for pick up the engine package from the port to your home. You also can appoint a local forwarding agent to do this if you are not free and not sure about the procedures. I know this is a bit inconvenient for you but we can not direct deliver to your home because it involve tax and some procedure that need customer to do by his own or his representative.

We will not give warranty on any force induction engines we sold. It is due to customer may raise up the boost pressure without notify us. This will cause the damage of pistons and rings if the fuel supply volume is not enough. The other reason is too far and not worth for us to go for inspecting the engine if any thing is happening. Actually the engine can last for many years after reconditioned if customer keeps it in stock boost pressure and give regular maintenance (change oil and filter accordingly). Customer should believe the engine is okay after we provided the detail photos and video during the recondition and test process. So customer must be fully trust on us.

Hope to hear from you soon. Thanks.

Regards,

What do you guys think. Does this sound pretty good.Im pretty sure it is i just want a second opinion. Its basically the full conversion for £1000
