jakeep82
I recently upgraded my spring from a .7 bar to a 1.2bar spring in my external wastegate, got my ep back on the road and its still only boosting .7 ! Rang up my local performance car specialists and they said it would be 1 of 3 things dumpvalve is knackerd EWG is knackerd or my turbo is knackerd ! Blocked up my dumpvalve and the vac pipe and it was still to low boost so its either EWG or turbo ? Has any one had this issues and how did they resolve it before i buy new EWG or new turbo ? and spend money on the wrong thing ? any help would be much appreciated
mattyD
Do you have an EBC?

jakeep82
Anybody help me ? pulling my hair out over this !
funny onion
You need to t piece into the boost signal which goes to the side feed of the wastegate, and run the solenoid in line with the boost signal to the top port on the wastegate. Then use the ebc to modify the boost signal reaching the top port. This should allow you any boost above 0.7. I have a 1 bar spring in mine but I only get about 0.9 of actual boost. Changing gaskets and having the cracks in my manifold helped me along the way too
funny onion
Would help to have the penny washer welded shut on the turbo too
akyakapotter
Funny onion sorry to hijack thread but do you happen to have any pics of wastegate plumbed in as im putting my td04 on tomorrow and have no clue how to attach it to my ebc.
funny onion
I don't have an ebc so none of my pics would help you I'm afraid boost signal for the side port on the wastegate comes off the turbo (as it would for the standard actuator). T piece into that line, from turbo to wastegate, and from the t piece run to solenoid, then from solenoid to the top port (making sure the ebc solenoid is the right way round according to the air flow direction- towards the wastegate). I'm on my phone or I could have drawn a little diagram in paint haha .
akyakapotter
Aww thank you I'll see what I can do I have enough vac line if I mess it up lol
funny onion
Yeah just have a go, it all makes sense if you just stare at it haha. I've tried loads of different ways of plumbing vac lines to my wastegate, But other things keep dying (such as the ongoing battle with fuel pressure) so I've never gotten round to buying an ebc. Good luck!
jakeep82
so i need both ports on my wastegate taken up with vac pipes? at the minute i have one vac pipe from turbo to bottom of wastegate so now i need a t piece in that and a vac pipe going to top of the wastegate ? jakeep82
yeah i do mate !
akyakapotter
if so i think its ment to be like this
jakeep82
is that black bit the solenoid or ebc ?
jakeep82
because i have no solenoid at the minute thats why i just want to run on wasetgate spring pressure so my set up at the minute is one from turbo to bottom of wastegate and thats it ! so should i put a t piece in that and run one to the top of the waste gate too?
akyakapotter
No man don't t it should be like this
jakeep82
thats what ive got mine set like with a 1.2 bar spring and yet im still getting just over .7 bar !
funny onion
Yeah as above, but dont t piece and run it to the top unless you have a working ebc in line. I tried doing that and it spiked to about 2 bar without a boost controller lol.
StuDoc 72
Your probably underboosting due to having your wastegate held shut by a cable tie lol. Edited June 27, 2012 by StuDoc
jakeep82
yeah but the thing is it is holding it shut enless it opens after .7 bar ! Do you think it could be the wastegate what is fucked or is it going to be a case of having the turbo off and welding the internal wastegate then see what happens from there?
StuDoc 72
Maybe the cable tie is stretching slightly? You wont be 100% sure its not the wastegate untill its welded shut so its defo worth doing. Might be obvious but have you checked all your turbo pipes are on and not leaking? Have you relocated the airfilter to the front? It coud be the daftest of things. I dont see it being the turbo if your not gettin any smoke or funny noises. And you external wastegate would cause you to over boost rather than underboost if it was faulty unless it is leaking ofcourse? To me you must have a leak somewhere. jakeep82
took off every vac pipe and checked them yesterday and none are leaking ! Yeh the air filter has been located to the front mate whys that? Is it easyer to take the whole manifold and all off instead of just the turbo?
StuDoc 72
Not just vac pipes what about the turbo pipes going to intercooler etc? Jus making sure the airfilter was relocated for a good air feed in the 1st place. Do you know someone who would lend you a wastegate to try it? Aye most cars tend to be easier to take off the manifold and the decat along with the turbo.
