Towbar
Well today has been a good day yet terrible all in on.First off i was going out with mates for a long drive, so checked with the previous owner as to what oil they were using so i could get some to keep for topping up, 5w/40.Checked this morning and she was fine, drove down to my old mans which is about 10 mile all groovy, untill he pointed out my tax was out, oooppppssss, so drove hime got my insurance and sub part of v5, got tax.Had a great day out with mates, then on the way home got to about 5 mile away and heard a slight knocking noise. But only at 1200rpm-1800rpm then it went, i assumed something was vibrating against something. Pottered the car to the closest safe place to stop, opened the bonent and even on idle there it was knock knock knock, deff internal noise. So great had to get the car home so pottered home about 4miles. Parked her up and left her be.Mate has popped round and had a quick listen, sounds like top end noise, checked the oil and nothing on dip stick. So thought i know what has happened, oil starvation. Looking at the alternator it is coverd in oil, so i am guessing its coming out if the cam seals?Tomorrow will take cam cover off see whats what? Not a great start to starlet ownership, so am trying to decide what action to take?Buy a replacement engine? Rebuild this one? Or save and forge her?Bugger.
Taggy
Ah gutted to hear your having problems, knocking is more than likely going to be bearing failure. Start it up and listen to see if its coming from the sump, if it is then its probably spun a bearing. Which means your crank has come into contact with the bearing surface causing scoring which eventually wears the bearing down to the point where it starts to knock. What ever you do dont drive it, if you have caught it early enough you can just take the crank off inspect it and change your bottom end bearings, which are £78 for a set.Lets hope your lucky and the crank isnt damaged You can get the crank polished if there is any marks, but scratches are a no no. If it is scratched you will need to get it ground down and undersize bearings put in.You can do this with the engine in the car also Here is a guide on building the engine i made, you can see what i mean about the bearings, its quite easy http://www.ukstarletowners.com/index.php?showtopic=52242&hl=%2Bguide+%2Bto+%2Bbuild+%2B5e Edited October 6, 2012 by Taggy

shorty
If tge alternator is covered id say your oil pump or sump have leaked and you have run low on oil starced the bottem end and shagged a bearing. i wouldnt even start the car to trace the sojnd mate. jack it up n whip the sump off and inspect the bottom end befor you go from there as you could cuase more damage dude.
