importing a car.. dummys guide wanted

Recommended Posts

spotted a car am after on tradecarview and realy having a hard time trying not to buy it. ive spoke to the company who have offered me a cif price for the car which from what i can gather is the price of the car + shiping+insurance.

now my main question is what is the full process to get it in the country. i pay them i take it they put the car on a boat and thats there side done from there i need to pay import tax(27.5%?) how do i go about this or do they find me? then when the boat arrives at the uk do i then need to pay the dock to take the car off and store it till i get it? again do they contact me and say hey we have a car for you?

then whats the proccess for getting the car all registered and legal. and what sorta costs should i expect to pay over and above the cif price + import tax.

am extremely tempted to pay for the car and just go for it but am concerned the lack of knowledge could lose the car or unexpected fees could raise the price above what would be a good deal.

realy keen to see if anyones done this them self am aware there are agents that do this but i cant see what role they play from getting the car off the boat to my door for the amount they charge

cheers shaun

I've never done it my self but if you are after abit of advice then you could always have a chat with Mark on tgtt (www.glanza.co.uk) He imports them him self and could point you in the right direction!

Marks a good lad and sure he'll try and help where he can!

ahh thats rather handy. so from what i gather i just pay to get it shiped to the uk then nip down and get it from the docks? will need to look into how to pay customs. it all seems to simple which concerns me cause noone ever seems imports there cars lol . the hardest part of it so far is telling the misses what i bought lol

i have the cash to buy the car but its just al the other hidden fees that concern had a few links sent to me which make for intresting reading. if i go for this it will knock my build back a fair few months which prob wont make it till close to end of next year. i was sure when i looked into it more i would find a reason why i couldnt buy it but the more i look into it the more it seems appealing lol. its fine ill tell the misses and just have to go ukso sofa surfing till she calms down :p

Worth talking to the guys that already have 4 paws mate, See if its really worth spending £3k to get one. It may be different from the norm, but parts are gonna be hard to source in terms of drivetrain.

ive thought about this as well, really want an s15 or R32 GTR and they're 10x cheaper in japan than here, but its all the stuff with importing myself that totally puts me off, seems like alot of hassle to do.

Doesn't really work out cheaper tbh, if your getting a well spec'd car then it may do.

When I was looking into it, just thinking is it really worth spending nearly £3k for a N/A? When for a little more you can get a starlet already in the country with a forged engine etc.
