EPnick22
right so ive gotta wait another 2 or 3 weeks till i get my rods (arghh) just got some stock pistons and rods i might drop in it to run it temporarily as not having a car is affecting my work and social life lol I have a 1.2mm athena head gasket, can they be used again once the heads taken off? as i dont fancy buying another one next month
TurboTobz
Headgaskets can be reused, not ideal. But clean it up put smear some wellseal over it and just be gentle. I done an engine for my old man, we had it apart numerous times (3 iirc) reused it everytime, and was only a shitty eBay job on a k series rover engine (the ones that eat head gaskets) and its still going to this day never shown any sign of going either. Some one off here brought a used Athena 1.2 from me to reuse. EPnick22
well i mean itll only be in there for a month maybe less, just thought itd be the most appropriate thing to do if they can be reused to save me another £100 !
TurboTobz
You could quiet happily use it until it begins to fail
AdamB
Well seeing as your going to need to buy an engine gasket kit to complete the rebuild if putting in stock parts anyway, that will come with a headgasket you can use.
EPnick22
dude the blocks all assembled in the car ready for pistons to go in
AdamB
Ah I thought you ment it was in bits as going by your thread about forging. You can reuse them but how long they last is another question, suppose it depends how much of a hard time it has. If I had my way I wouldn't even use a headgasket, but its cheaper to replace the gasket than the engine if it goes tits up.
EPnick22
well itll only be running around stock power for the next month til i get hold of some rods
AdamB
You'll probably be fine, but me being anal probably would buy another gasket. Am sure you can just get an OEM one for like £20 so might as well just use that?
EPnick22
£20? theyre like £40 otherwise id buy one, plus theyre a bitch to scrape off after lol i could do with having my car done by sunday if i get this single piston tomorrow, i wouldnt get the gasket til at least like thursday
AdamB
Am sure I've seen cheap ones on ebay, if its only to last a month or so. True about getting to you though, maybe try a local motorfactors tomorrow? Still £20-£40 is still cheaper than an aftermarket one. I've heard people re-using the Zep gaskets before, but not Athena's.
