Anybody in or around Dundee to look at my boost problem

Recommended Posts

I'm looking for some help to get my car thru an mot.

I've done a tonne of work to it including fitting all new brakes a new temp sensor and wiring

a new lammda and wiring

and also oil pressure switch and wiring.

I've fitted a cat, a new radiator and I've relocated the filter.

It's also had new plugs and plug leads and a new coil lead, and a working pcv valve fitted.

My problem is the car has failed the fast idle test (only just) its 0.4 and needs to be 0.3 to pass, I had my local mobile tune up guy out this morning and he reduced the emissions from 0.5 to 0.4. He said that the lamda is working and speaking to the ecu controlling the fueling but he couldn't lower the emissions any more as the ecu was working against him, the adjustments he made, made no difference to the co2 output.

The lamda and the hydrocarbons are fine suggesting the cat is not working properly.

I'm not overly bothered about this as it's literally only just out.

The car doesn't boost properly either it stops making power at 4000rpm or above,

it seems to boost from 2700-4000rpm then looses boost and coughs and splutters I've adjusted the fuel pressure up and down on the fpr, it's currently 2.5 bar I've also adjusted the boost on the actuator which has had little or no affect overall.

It seems to be boosting between 0.5bar-0.9bar on the gauge,it goes very well when cold and very well when hot and goes well off boost but acts as if its got a boost leak somewhere but it doesn't sound like its leaking boost, I'm now struggling to work out what's wrong.

The cars been off road for near 3 yrs and there's approx 20 miles on a brand new built engine its had new pistons crank and rods.

Because it won't boost properly I can't get a good run in it to get any sort of decent heat in the cat.

I'm about to fit a new knock sensor as soon as it arrives, got a flash code this morning (no 52) knock sensor.

Is there anybody local willing to have a look for me?

I've got plenty tools and a dry garage and would appreciate help from someone with a little more knowledge than myself. Failing that ill need to trailer it or tow it to my local tuner checkpoint garage in Arbroath as its not taxed or mot'd yet.

Get an emissions friendly mot:)

Ha ha cheers for that but ment to say in original post that wasn't an option!!

I'm sure my mot station will pass it on the day but when I handed it in after fixing many faults it was running like a bag of nails, the on boost issue, I rekon they've took it to get it hot for the fast idle test and it's not been running rite. The lad I'm dealing with is good and says give it a tune and bring it back.

I've since tried to get it at least boosting co distantly but it bogs down like a 2 stroke engine at 4000rpm no matter what I do.

I'm gonna stay loyal to my mot station I've had many cars in before every one been decated or fitted with dangerous aftermarket spoilers that may harm pedestrians :)

Or non standard hid kits and they've always been good with me. I'm gonna make the effort and get this sorted. It's my winter runaround so want it as reliable as possible and not chasing performance figures.

Just want it running rite :(

What's your full list of mods? If possible I would take the adjustable fpr back off (if you have the standard) if you're only boosting up to 0.8bar on the ct9 you don't need the fpr. You could've actually experienced a bit of knock if playing with the fuelling too, if it was knocking it would pull the timing and loose power.

Funnily enough mine was running like a bag of shit when I tried to MOT it earlier this year and it was just slightly lean, it struggled to get through the emissions due to that, with the CAT in too.

As for the boost issue if it's the standard actuator it may be weak, a boost leak should show up all the time.

You dont need a emissions test for this car. Theres a thread on here somewhere with a way of getting round it. I think you ask for an engine specific emissions test but the 4efte isnt on the uk database, so they have to do a non cat test. Have a search and see what it says.

From what I know its its got a ct9 turbo a sard fpr the filters been relocated and that's about it I think.

It's also got forged pistons and rods and a new crank.

It was fitted with a decat but since fitting the cat it seems to run slightly better??

The problem persists in every gear at 4000rpm just as its coming on full boost, I'm a panelbeater to trade so slightly out my depth after checking all the obvious things fuel pressure and the waste gate actuator. The turbos brand new and the waste gate seems to be working on the actuator arm.

I was unsure it needed it an uprated fuel pump but the tune up guy adjusted the fuel pressure back down to 2.5bar and it seems to be getting enough fuel. I don't have the oem pressure regulator.

I think once the boost issue is sorted it should pass ok.

The tune up guy measured the temp of the cat it was 300* @ the lambda but only 200* at the bottom end of the cat he said it needs to be an even 300* to function properly.

Think I've seen this before do you have a link I can print off for the mot station??

Bump..

Can anybody spare an hour or two this week to have a quick look over my Glanza?

I'll be fitting a new abs pump on Wednesday and I just need to get it boosting properly to get it back in for its mot.

Also can anybody get me a link I can print out for the mot station re: emissions tests for 4efte engines.

Thanks in advance

here you go mate. Took a while but i found it. Have a right read through that it might help you out :)

Cheers fella :)

Try ringing gbr motorsport? Think they're over forfar way, they should be able to help you, think they're pretty good with starlets. Never used them myself though!

Just looked them up on the net cheers for thatm, ill give them a ring tomorrow they would be the obvious choice given their knowledge with the starlets and probably a bit closer to me :)

Never knew about them cheers ;)

Ah thats unfortunate! Never knew they'd closed down.

The next closest place i know of is performance hq in dalgety bay. Or even RA developments in perth, they specialise in subarus but they'll know plenty about other turbod cars too

Yea cheers for that dude, I'm familiar with both them places from my Subaru days.

Ill nip thru to checkpoint garage in Arbroath with it or Wallace performance in Aberdeen but that's a good bit further.

It's back in for mot tomorrow the emissions are "better" I've fitted the cat and ill inform them it doesn't need a full car test...... Maybe test a car nearby that's 15 yrs younger :)

Should be ok hoping it passes and I can get out in it. I'll be able to drive it thru to Arbroath to get the boost issue sorted once its mot'd and I swap the insurance from Evo.

Snows coming so that's it off road till April now :(
