BIGGFOOT
not sure if this the right section to post in but having a problem with cooling. I Set off to pick my mate up from work today ( about a 15 minute drive ) after 10 minutes of driving (normal) noticed a bit of steam coming out of my bonnet scoop. I thought nothing of it at first as i'd just washed it n thought maybe a bit of water had gone on my manifold or engine, maybe 1-2mins later noticed more steam + my temp gauge was right at the top! pulled over immediately onto somebodys driveway and turned it off, opened the bonnet and my coolant bottle was shaking violently spitting boiling water everywhere. left it to cool off for few mins then started my mission of finding water ( I was on a country lane in the middle of nowhere) lol I knocked on the 2 houses that were connected to the long driveway i'd pulled into, was going to ask for water but nobody answered.......im not proud of this but I kind of jumped over the back fence and found myself watering can and a outside tap thank god. car drives normal no smoke, oil is clean -ish (not cheesey white cream) I don't think its as bad as a headgasket but just wondering if anybody has had same issues or if its a common fault and how to cure it????? ive just ordered a thermostat as its only a tenner and heard they can get stuck open or closed, do you think this is a good place to start? any help much appreciated thanks
Gainzy
Yes try change the thermostat, is your fan still kicking in at times?
BIGGFOOT
yeah might aswell for what its worth the fan still kicks in pal. is the thermostat sticking a common fault on these? Edited February 27, 2014 by robzlo bigfoot
Gainzy
I reckon just wear n tear could happen anytime fingers crossed it's that
BIGGFOOT
nice1 gainz its getting compression tested tomorrow (been wanting to do one before I tdo4 anyway) and might aswell stick mot emissions reader in radiator see if anything comes up - apparently this is the cheapest and easiest way to find out if your head gaskets gone. Taggy
if its over boiling the rad overflow bottle its more than likely going to be a head gasket, try replacing the thermostat to be sure as a cheap fix, but sounds like the HG has gone
BIGGFOOT
oh shizzy! do you recommend not driving it tag? and has yours done same thing and it was head gasket? im going to tootle to the garage tomorrow find out for deffo if it is or not fingers crossed....... its not that hard a job though head-gasket and at least id know it was done then
Taggy
strangely your the second person this week i have talked to about blown head gaskets! It can be a few things to be honest but most common is a knackered thermostat, which is a cheap fix, but I would just take it to a local garage and ask them to a do a sniff test on your radiator coolant. Basically if your internal combustion gasses are leaking into your water jacket, the pressure of this is what causes all your coolant to overfllow into your water bottle. If this is the case then the test will pick up the exhaust gasses in your coolant Parts to repair a HG your self are about £60 quid for the HG and about £60 for the head bolts and £30 to get the head skimmed. Its an easy job on the starlet and there are lots of guides to do it your self. Otherwise a garage will probably charge you about £250 labour i would say. Hope that helps! Chris_GlanzaV98
If you can get a bore scope stick it down into the bored if one of your pistons is alot cleaner than the other most likely you have cracked the gasket and are effectivly boil eashing the pistons, hard bit is getting hold of the scope haha Good luck mate not the hardest job in the world to change one
BIGGFOOT
been and got the compression test done got top results so not head gasketcylinder1= 165 2=170 3=165 4=170thermostats arrived so going to do that tomorrow cheers lads I thought the worst!
Jay85
Had a overheating problem not so long ago!! Make sure when you change the stat that you flush the rad, I had an issue that it would only overheat if I gave it some beans! Turned out half the rad was blocked Edited March 5, 2014 by Jay85
