Wanted ! Starlet gt turbo

Recommended Posts

you don't know it's a new turbo. If it smokes on over run it's either new turbo SEALS or valve stem seals. Both jobs are simple to do and turbos can be rebuilt yourself.

I always thought they were a specialist job but I read in Graham Bells Forced Induction Tuning that he claims this is not true. He said so long as you are careful, mark it all and don't drop any of the parts, or anything into the turbo, then it's fine to do yourself.

As for valve stem seals, easy enough job I have done it with both the head on and off no problems.

At the end of the day mate, what I've come to realise is, show me a Starlet that doesn't smoke.

I was surprised to see some very mint examples at Rockingham this year( Japfest 2) smoking. I looked at my brother with a nod of appreciation. No smoke, no poke.

Yes there are a lot of rough ones in the UK, but there are some sweet ones too.

As far as I can tell, importing one only means that it's got a lower chance of not being rotten. Cars break down in Japan you know. And if it's in Japan how can you tell it's faulty until it turns up.

You can get a nice Ep82 for that sort of money, and eventually it will go wrong. So saying that one hasn't got summit wrong will only be true till until it does fornt a fault, at which case you're back to square one and need a car.

If you want a car like this, then either accept that it's going to have faults, at nearly 25 years old it's to be expected, or really search high and low for perhaps a members one whos has lots of history.

These cars are fairly simple anyway, there won't be much that will go wrong.

Things like turbos and valve stems seals are consumerables. They have a shelf life and will at one point need replacing. Just don't be disheartened if a car you see does smoke a wee bit etc.

I think the important thing personally is if the shell is in decent condition, and the engine sounds healthy.

The rest, well you can just fix the rest as you go.

That's my two pence for all it's worth anyway.

So long as you do your research, stay well AWAY from hywycombe sales, then you'll be alright.

And any problems then I'm sure the lads here will help! Always helped me when I needed info.

Who is? You mean what is a hybrid turbo.

It's terminology ranges from who in the business you ask.

The general concessus is any turbo that has been modified with non-standard parts. I.e. the compressor wheel size is increased, and or more blades.

Some say that's it's only a hybrid if the AR ratio has been increased via modifying the housing.

But I would say it's certainly a stock turbo that's running non-stock parts.
