  1. this is the law...

Display of Vehicle Registration Marks on Imported Vehicles

(which have a restricted space for a standard sized number plate)

Certain imported vehicles may be permitted to display number plates with smaller characters if:

    *

The vehicle does not have European Community Whole Vehicle Type Approval

    and

    *

The vehicle's construction/design cannot accommodate standard size number plates

Specifications for smaller sized plates (for certain imported vehicles)

    Character Height 64mm

    Character Width 44mm

    Character Stroke 10mm

    Space between characters 10mm

you can request a cover note from the DVLA to keep in the car with you regarding number plate law, just incase you get tugged for it. you need to get a copy of the "Road Vehicles (Display of Registration Marks) Regulations 2001".

ive been pulled before in mine, and told i had illegal plates. i told him he was mistaken and suggested he have another check. he did, appologised and let me on my way.

my plate is this big, and fully legal due to the small recess on the bumper for the plate. i think its 13x3 iirc.

as for the exhaust thing, unfortunately they can request you have it checked as and when they feel like it. the second you leave the mot station, the car is potentially modified, and if the plod suspects this, he is entitled to ask for it to be checked. best thing to do really, is to be really polite and explain that youve had it checked before and its fine.

  2. youre allowed bike sized lettering on the front of an import IF there isnt enough space in the OEM design to cater for a full uk sized plate. you can get away with it on starlets. im fairly up on this, i had some issues with the same thing on my S15, i have the leg somewhere. ill find the ref number on it if you like so you can request a copy to keep in the glovebox.

as for the emissions, the car has to pass a fast idle test. if you cant pass one of them, then you have other things to worry about. even my old glanza passed those, and that used to kill trees just by driving past them.

if youre failing on emissions, they must be trying to log it as a uk spec starlet.

easy way round that... book it in as a Toyota Glanza, they wont be able to find it in the system, and will run it as an import. job done.

  3. I think the story needs a correction Bill. you make it sound like you were way too cool about having it mapped.

i was close to using physical force to make you have it mapped, you massive gay ^^. fat people crying isnt nice to watch. it would have been luls if it blew up to be honest. i would have also been able to actually sleep in the recovery truck on the way home as well.... ^

    now, the car.

ive driven alot of starlets, from stock all the way up to my old one. Bills car is one of the nicent examples ive ever driven. the power is spot on, with a very usable torque band (anyone who knows what a good power graph is, will agree). now i dont usually throw praise about easliy, but i was impressed with the mapping, especially as it was only a shitty blue emanage. so i would recommend Nick to anyone after a nice usable, safe road map.

id also like to say that i was overly impressed with the turbo. Geo, youve made a good little hybrid there mate. i was surprised.

anyway. i was so glad to get home last night. fuck driving up there ever, ever again.

  4. yeah, it was so bloody obvious once the bonnet was open and there was some light in there what the problem was.

im disgusted that a proper "tuner"/mechanic couldnt figure it out. it was so bloody obvious. anyone who thinks a blowing exhaust is how a boost controller sounds is a plonker to be honest.

to think people let him actually work on their cars!

  5. on a stock turbo, its pointless. they run out of puff at about 6.

it is however possible, but id recomment getting stiffer valve springs first.

i had my old one at 9k on the dyno, and used to rev it out to 8500 almost every time i drove it.

  6. you could spend thousands on the 4efe, and it wouldnt be as good as a stock 4efte mate.

the 4efe is designed to be a towny engine. it was never intended to give performance. anything over 100hp and youll need to really throw money at it.

a 4efte is infinitely more tunable in the long run.

even a 5e isnt that great. they are quite pony to be honest.

  7. If thats the way everyone wants it to be why dont we just text each other with the info and keep it all quiet rather than putting it on the forum so that way the the original lot will be there?

that wouldnt really work though would it.

why not put it up on the site? its a meet. it should be put on here. nobody new will turn up of its all kept hush hush.

and before you jump in with the inevitable "but you said blah blah", there is a distinct difference between local kent guys new to the scene coming to a local meet, and a ton of people coming along from far and wide on a one-off hoping for a pic in a mag.

  8. the uksc sticker thing is a good idea.

geo, send some down mate. well pop them on the cars for the mag pics.

ill even stick one on silvia for a laugh.

also, all of you lot jumping in on the tgtt thing, youre all noobs to be honest and dont know what youre talking about. anyone who remembers what tgtt used to be like a few years ago will agree with me (ie, a good forum)

what i said up there was MY OPINION, ive been about long enough, and been to enough tgtt meets (ive been a member on there for about 6 years and have about 7000 +posts across the 4 or so different forums they've had) to know that there are A LOT of pricks on there who like to show off, especially when a camera is clicking, they all love that BHP figure! also, dylan is a chud ^^

the last time one of the uksc larger meets had a load of tgtt members join in, we ended up getting kicked out by police because people were drag racing through the carpark... we still have trouble at BW because of that, and that was about 2 years ago now.

my gripe was that this has always been a uksc meet, for the local guys. i dont want a load of people turning up, being dicks and ruining it for us locals who are there come rain or shine, regardless of magazine shoots. im not trying to be elitist. but why should a load of people who never go to the meet come along just because of a magazine? the medstone meets are not a "cruise", they are meets for a group of friends. now everyone who goes regularly will know im the first person to welcome new people, so its not about outsiders coming along. i just really dont want it turning into something that will require police attention.

if someone acts like a prick, the security guards will kick us out and we wont be allowed back again, and that would be really, really shit.
