lip on rear brake drum backing plate

while i was fitting new shoes on my starlet i noticed a lip that runs all the way round the backing plate that obviously sits inside the groove round the drum, but half of the lip has corroded away and fell off, will it cause me problems, and what is it there for anyway?

Maybe dust shield for dirty roads, don't affect brakes...

I priced new backing plates for my glanza from Toyota £90+vat each 😂

bloody hell, that's steep, think ill just clean mine up with a wire brush and paint

Yeh got mine blasted and powdercoated

Mine did the same on my corolla, started making a horrible grating noise, i just broke that little lip off wire brushed it then stuck the drum back on. Been like it a year or 2 now and not had an issue.

thats what ive done Morgey, just pulled off the remaining bits then ground it flat, drum spins nice and smooth now, if anything the best its been.
