Djaniero Posted November 4, 2016 Posted November 4, 2016 Hi guys, Has anyone done a guide of how to cut off the seat feet from oem seats, and weld them to aftermarket seat rails? Basically I want to fit a pair of Mr2 seats into my Gt, and everyone basically keeps saying to simply cut off the feet from the GT seats and fit them to the mr2 seat rails. Never done this before, so just wanted to get an idea of whats involved. Thanks Quote
StuDoc 72 Posted November 4, 2016 Posted November 4, 2016 Have you welded before or got the equipment to weld? If not its a non starter. If you do then there is no need for a guide. Its a case of cut off the feet grind back the paint and weld them onto the new seats, nothing complex. Quote
Djaniero Posted November 4, 2016 Author Posted November 4, 2016 Thanks Stu. Never done anything like this before, so will be taking the seats out and giving them to my mechanic - he knows a good welder. I just wanted to know what was involved. Quote
Will Tuite91 Posted November 4, 2016 Posted November 4, 2016 I'm a metal fabricator from Ireland, my advice would be as above from stu, to a welder not a big job but if not used to working with metal I would not advise a DIY job as you have to think about safety of sitting in the seat afterwards Quote
Pete_A Posted November 4, 2016 Posted November 4, 2016 Wouldnt cuttinh/reweilding make a week point, in a bad crash youd be strapped/stuck on a potential lump of flying steel and cloth Quote

Djaniero Posted November 4, 2016 Author Posted November 4, 2016 Hmm... So its not safe to do so even if its done properly? What are the alternatives then... To buy new rails to suit the new seats? Quote
5e colin Posted November 4, 2016 Posted November 4, 2016 (edited) Do not do as first diy welding het it done for you as your weld will probly snap orlook like shite Edited November 4, 2016 by 5e colin Quote
Djaniero Posted November 4, 2016 Author Posted November 4, 2016 (edited) Yeah like I said I'm definitely not doingb t... Just want to know of its safe to do even if its done professionally? Edited November 4, 2016 by Djaniero Quote
5e colin Posted November 4, 2016 Posted November 4, 2016 Very safe if the welding part is done by experienced welder they will not fail as a good weld of 1" holds 2.5ton that gives you an idea of the strength more then adequate Quote
patman Posted November 4, 2016 Posted November 4, 2016 Tim mate, I done this with Subaru wrx seats mate, although I was very lucky as the back legs of the Subaru rails were a straight fit into my back holes on the gt, it was a case of just modifying the front feet, what I would do first mate is see how they line up and go from there 👍🏻 Quote
