scarletstarlet
Hi all, there's a course whirring sound when my Starlet's running, which I think is either coming from the alternator or the water pump, somewhere around there attached to the fan belt at least. Is that likely to be the cause of the noise do you think? Any tips or insight into messing around in those areas?
Calum122
Do you mean coarse? I'm not sure what a course whirling sound is?
maerijn
You could loosen the alternator belt and and run the car for a short time to see if the noise disappears. Alternatively you could hold a long screwdriver against the suspect area and hold the other end against your ear to pinpoint the source of the sound. Alternators going bad is pretty common and new ones are not cheap, if youre not bothered with the work you could replace the bearings of yours instead
scarletstarlet
Thanks! The long screwdriver did the trick, it's the water pump. Also, I've noticed fresh coolant underneath the water pump, guess that's confirmation.
