Dean @RW-Developments
just a quick note when i had my 4efe engine my head gasket went so i had the head skimmed i had 1.5 mm taken off which is a fair bit. they only usually skim thous off i think i paid £

ToyotaTech15
Was there any performance increase from the higher compression ratio?Usually on a normal cylinder head say Vauxhall as an example, a good whack can be skimmed off on the lathe, as they have inication marks on the cylinder head to show how far it can be skimmed before any piston to valve contact, if the full amount was taken off it would raise the ratio a good bit and would give a noticable difference to performance,When i removed my starlet head from my spare engine, the top of the piston inserted into the head ever so slightly as the piston sat a few millimetres above the block, I didnt want to risk skimming the starlet head as there seemed to me, to be more chance of internal contact, plus two of the valves were close to the face of the head.If the head could be skimmed alot it would make a difference but it looks like there is only enough to compensate for head warpage from head gasket failureGary
rorenapier
Gary,Ye cant skim a head on a lathe.... a Mill you can If you wanted to know how much to skim the head, use plasticine on the top of the piston, then put the head back on, rotate the cam so the valves leave an indication on the putty.Slice the putty through the indication and take a measurement if the gap between the piston top and the valve.Obviously you cant take the maximum from it, but it will give you an ididcation of how much you can take off safely.Rory
Dean @RW-Developments
tbh there was a slight difference in performance it seemed to pick up quicker lower down, but my piston rings were going at the same sort of time so i went 4efte
