Say I Went To A Garage With This

Recommended Posts

say i went to a garagre with a lsd could they just put it in or would i need different parts or a gear box rebuild or somthing?and isit costly

You will need the driveshafts also i believe. I think its just a straight swap but im not 100% certain myself.

Also it may be worth changing your clutch while they have the gearbox off? Might mean a bit more moeny for the clutch but labour won't be much more as they are taking the gearbox off anyway.

The chances are you will need to see a gearbox specialist. Even if a garage did offer to take up the job, personally I would rather see a gearbox specialist. Gearboxes are fiddly things and I wouldn't want someone to do it wrong, and it's not easy to remove/fit a gearbox!

While your getting the LSD fitted, as Sparky mentioned you may as well get the diff bearings with seals and gaskets, but I'd also replace the syncros for peace of mine. I did this with my old Glanza and the gearbox was a beauty. It cost £150 in labour from CogTeg Transmissions in Bradford, who I would highly recommend.

Wont need driveshafts if its an aftermarket LSD for a non LSD box :p

You will need new diff bearings and gearbox seals/gaskets from Toyota. Quite a big job

I stand corrected

On a side note Sparky what would you need to fit the standard LSD box? is it just s straight swap for the old unit??? Obviously i won't need the driveshafts as i can use the standard non-lsd ones as they are getting cut up anyway.

As Idree's said it would be piece of mind to give the gearbox a freshen up

When I bought my GT it had a TRD diff installed and a gearbox overhaul and the gear shifts are as tight as a ducks arse!!

@ Jason you would probably need the LSD shafts tbh as they are equal length i.e if you used non LSD ones the one might not be long enough even if they are being cut up/modified.

I know there is an extra gearbox mount but again obviously seeing as your car isnt a EP chassis you wont need it or would need to make up a mount or something.

Not sure if an aftermarket LSD in a non LSD box is better than a aftermarket LSD in an LSD box though???

I've tried to understand the different diffs with no success. i know that mine tries to kill me though haha. its like it watches till you relax your grip ever so slightly then POW right in the kisser  i realise that doesnt really answer any questions.

Thanks Sparkster!

It might be easier for me to source another long drive shaft than trying to find a LSD shaft as they will be more cash. Although i may get away with the standard shafts but don't know yet.

They have already fitted the standard gearbox in place and welded on a mount so this will have to be ground off and moved over ;) But will be a better drive with the LSD box and may actually get some traction, little but not much
