I'm considering teaching myself to weld, I have ZERO experience in welding but think its a good thing to know how to do :p

So basically do you think this would be a good beginner kit to learn with ??

Have a look Please :)

price seems good, and the reviews seem no bad

I know alot of peeps on this site know alot about this stuff so help with it would be smashing :D

Cheers

if i were you buddy i would keep your eye out on the bay for a half tidy mig to learn with.i found it so easy to pick up.some will disagree im sure but with a mig if you cant get on with it you can allways sell it on for pretty much what you paid for it.if you go for a mig get a gas mig as gasless are crap and the wire is extautionate.

to practice on i used a meter of angle iron and just cut it into chunks and weld bit on so you get the feel for it and the plus point is if you get into it you can make pretty much anything you want.

Welding is something ive allways wanted to do and allthough i did learn myself to arc a while ago its been a while since i picked up a stick so im starting from scratch haha.

Im with the above remark though ide go with Mig if i was you, ive done some mig and its fairly easy to pick up but be prepared to waste alot of metal, filler and gas before having acceptabel welds haha.

Ive finally got some money together and bought myself a 160amp AC/DV Tig welder aswell :) Currently boxed up in my room awaiting finding some gas, ordering my foot pedal and sitting down to waste so scrap haha

Good luck and keep us updated.

yep mig and tig are the easyer to do, you can get a mig quite cheap, but remember never weld out side and with mig you can use co2 gas, which is very cheap, and can also weld stainless and alli.

i was allways under the impression you needed tig to weld alli?am i wrong?hmmmm i will have a go later.

as for gas nip down to your local pub and ask them if you can buy a c02 gas bottle off them as they get it for pennys, i paid £20 for a full size c02 bottle, size is 120cm tall x 23 cm diameter, i have had that bottle for well over a year.

hi

all welding is a process of learning the process&then lots of practice .

in my case i learnt to arc weld & oxy- acetylene welding with a hobby course @rhe local TAFE college

with the basics of welding learnt &lots of practice you can then teach yourself to weld using the tig &mig process

the tig &mig process can be adapted to weld all sorts of material as different gases are required to weld the various materials ie ali requires pure argon whereas the various steels can be welded using CO@ or other gas blends

so you see there is more to using the various welding processes than simply buying a welder &then start praticising there is all the knowledge & lots of practice before you can make a passable /servicable weld

good luck with your desire to learn to weld the various metals. it won`t necessarily be easy /but also fustrating as your welding gets better

Arc welding is ok but you can risk it blowing through on thin steel. Your best bet is to get a mig kit around 120 amp single phase kit it gives a smooth weld. Don't bother with a gasless mig the whole idea with mig is the gas surrounds the weld which gasless won't do. You can get a wolf weld gas mig kit off eBay for around 180 delivered

tbh mate as said above if your just looking to weld steal then get a mig there really easy to use, but make sure you get a gas mig as i have a non gas mig and it just spits its pure shit and expensive for wire! plus depending on what your welding you will only beable to weld that desired metal unless you buy lots of reals of different wires for different materials

ARC

i also have an arc welder which is great if your welding thick metal but thin stuff requires real skill ive welded all sorts with it but the metal has to be really clean, realistically you need to be welding 3mm thick plus! theres no triger etc just set the welder then strike the rod like a match, it can be a rite pain getting a weld started unless stupidly clean mental is being used.

TIG

ok this is what i do for a job as im an aluminium welder and fabricator. this would be the welder you would use for all different materials i.e alloy, steal, cast, stainless steal etc

all you need to do is change the settings on the welder and use different filler rod etc.

there is alot more to tig welding as you have to angle your torch at 45 deg whilst moving it foward adding your rod in sequence and operating your foot pedal much like a car clutch, this is not really the sort of welder for getting an insite into welding....

the main thing is practice and lots of it that goes for any sort of welder

a tig welder would be used to create amazing looking welds like pieces of art it leaves the desived bead where the weld is perfectly folded( platted)

ebay is the best bet but dont buy 2 cheap :D

Cheers lads thats helped me out alot!! :(

Motherwell college do a 10 week course on practical welding (no qualifications at the end of it) aimed totally at people wanting to do it as a hobby :p its £70 and on wednesday nights. Only problem is, it only runs from late september each year so missed this year :D .

I signed up but was moving house at the time and they sent all the enrolment/payment stuff to my old address so missed out :D i'll b going next year though :p
