speakers...hmm, i feel like an idiot but...

Recommended Posts

Order the speakers on new years day! got them yesterday. took a while to remove the dash etc, but i did it.

started wiring up, did the drivers side no prob, sounds good. (not loud enuf, but thats another story) then i did the passenger side. now this is where my problem is. when the volume is up it makes that shitty vibrating speaker sound! now could this be because i got the wires round the wrong way? or because of something else

...this will be embarasing if i got the wires mixed up, but im sure i did it right.

Any help?

Cheers Tom

well if you simply removed the wires off the old speakers and put them on the new ones then it should be ok. the spade connectors that were on mine were like all speaker one larger than the other so you cant get them round the wrong way. if yours aint like this then just try swapping them around incase it simply the wiring.... if it still happens then it sounds like you have a dodgy set of speakers

shouldnt have much of a difference which way round the wires are, as either phase will work adequately, its most likely the fact something in there is rattling (starlet interiors arent designed for big audio installations), so something in there is probably just rattling away.

either that, or the speakers themselves are supposed to be amplified externally, the 15wrms from your head unit isn't enough to power less sensitive speakers than the stock items (aftermarket ones might be more powerful, but they're FAR less sensitive, meaning it takes more power to physically get them moving and to sound as good as the stock ones, but given the appropriate power they will obviously be capable of alot more, with the correct secure mounting). but alas, our tinboxes dont help out in that respect :p

I feel my stock speakers are ample for my listening needs personally, sound alright to me.

Still have the stock radio/cassette player too :p

...you havent heard much else have you

nah but seriously, all that matters is that you're happy with em, least it wont get broken into/nicked!

note 1.if your running the standard head unit then the sound quality will be rubbish with more powerful speakers.you would be better off with the standard speakers as they are made for that headunit and as mikey jay said they dont actually sound that bad.there is room for improvement though

note 2.if you have a aftermarket head unit with the new spakers then play about with the bass settings.most people crank the bass to the top and the treble to the bottom.not the way to get a good sound.mine is set at a little bit of bass with a treble a little more than the bass.if you have good speakers or a sub this should be plenty.theres nothin worse than a system that has tons of bass but you cant hear the music at all

note 3.the speakers at the front are only a very small 4".it would be quite hard to get any smaller.ive got pioneer 4" speakers at the front and they sound fantastic.the reason is they have virtually no bass on them at all.small 4" speakers cant handle bass.i have a sub for my bass.no speakers on the parcel shelf, just 2 pioneers up front and a sub.it sounds amazing because the bass is deep but clear and loud due to the pioneers

thanks from the reply. i have a newish headunit (sony) and the speakers are 4inch pioneers. they are actually ok for no bass, just sound a bit wank when its cranked up..

but are loud enough for me. haha, still may get some 6x9s see how it goes. to be honest its not to much trouble or money, just got other stuff to buy first.

least its got rid of the cracking, popping sound, coming from the toyota ones.

Components and pods are they way to go if you want a clear uplifting sound but remember you'll need a simple amp to power them. Your system sounds like its set up alright. Have you just thrown the speakers in without mounting them? Otherwise they'll be vibrating all over the place.
