Vf series turbo's

Recommended Posts

I know i did post this on tgtt but there are different users on here so looking for as much info as i can get!

Anyone running one?

Do you have anything else to compare it to? Your old setup?

What boost were you making at what revs? (x.xbar@xxxxrevs?)

Was looking to go td04 but seen a few things about the vf24, im assuming it will have a bit more lag than the td04 but anyone know how much more!?

Would only be looking to run 1-1.2 bar so it maybe wouldnt even be worth while?

Some info i found from a link from a couple threads down by Idrees.

VF23

This turbo is considered a great all-around turbo. Like the VF22 it utilizes the largest P20 exhaust housing. This housing is mated with a smaller compressor housing of the of the VF24. This turbo is considered optimal in applications with range from mild to slightly wild. It does not have the same top end power of the VF22, but spools up significantly quicker.

VF24

This turbo shares its compressor housing with the VF23 however, this housing is mated with a smaller (P18) exhaust side. The smaller characteristics of this turbo allow it to provide ample bottom end power and quick spool. This turbo is very popular for Imprezas with automatic transmissions and Group N rally cars.

VF28

This turbo came standard on the STi Version 5. In terms of overall size, it is smaller than the VF22, VF30 and VF34, and about same size as the VF23.

I spoke to a guy on scoobynet about the vf series and his recommendation was the vf28 as anything below that i.e vf24 is gonna be mega laggy but i saw a vid posted on here of a 4dr ep91 turbo conversion running a vf24 pumping an sti so its up to yourself really but i will be going vf at some point maybe later in the year and will be going 28

Vf24 is not particularly strong... vf34/35 are silly strong and will boost like a mofo!

personally i would try and get one of the twin scroll vf series turbos might be more work and a custom mani might be needed but the spool will be greatly improved.

Vf38 from the jdm subie ... mega!

on a 5e i would say possible vf35... yeah the vf24 will spool earlier but i just dont like how weak they can be, vf35 will take anything you throw at it and with maximum boost levels of around 1.5bar the scope for power is huge, but might be lagy

not sure that the vf rage has the same flange fitment as td04 but could be wrong. personally i would look at a td04 hybrid... my brother in law has a td04 hybrid on his bugeye impreza that would out spool at vf range turbo be silly strong and still have scope for 300bhp

andy forrester is a Subaru specialist but does the tdo4 hybrids, you can also send your old td04 as an exchange to get money off might be worth a think:

i have tried using a vf23 a td04 and now a vf28.

can not really say much on the vf23 as it was running about 2bar and only getting .9bar at the manifold massive boost leak still seen 218bhp and not long after it went lol my fault

fixed the leak put a td04 on really good made 210bhp on the vf23 map

and then got a mint vf28 got it mapped to 1.1bar and made 252bhp i have a build thread and all the graphs are there mate for all the turbos i have used. i am still on stock internals on a safe map so good power and you can run 1.4bar and they will see 300bhp easy think of the vf28as an inbetweener of the td04 and the tdo5. plus the vf28 has a p18 exsaust housing compared to the p20 exsaust that the vf23 and 24 have

hope this helps

yep the vf28 is a bit of a beast on your setup!

i have a vf35 on my 5e but im yet to fire it up but it should be a good setup and make some decent power, thats what im hoping for anyway.

when i get my arse in gear and finish it off, its almost there now really ive just been taking my time with everything and doing little bits at a time. then the starlet got kicked out the garage so its outside now and all the snow and everything held me back, im looking for a garage to store it in somewhere.

i cant remember if i bought the 35 off ebay or scoobynet, it seemed in good condition but i sent it off to turbo dynamics for a rebuild so its like new.

Whens the big day then bean?

Where did you get the vf35 from?

if you need a vf35 get onto scoobynet... they sell there regularly, think i sold mine for £250.

Vf35 on a 5E is just waiting for trouble, that thing will be mental :p the kick it produced in my scoob...i cant imagine what would happen at full boost in a ep85 lol
