Is this setup 'safe'

Recommended Posts

Started looking at another glanza v now which seems very reasonably priced considering the modifcations done. I just wanted to make sure that the mods im about to list are safely running this car without the need for further mods. Im asking this becasue i don't want there to have been any long term damage done to the car. Here is the list of mods listed in the add:

blitz dual turbo timer

speedo motion timer

speedo converter

double pillar pod with boost guage and temp guage

decat pipe

toy tuning air filter relocation kit

hybrid ct9 turbo

cat back system 2.5 inch

hdi intercooler

1.3 bar rated rad cap

powerflex polyurethane engine mount bushes

fse adjustable fuel regulator

D2 fully adjustable coilovers

Jperformance ct9 manifold

Thanks, Jamie.

turbo timers good if used properly allows the turbo to cool down when the cars stopped

gauges are also good again if used allows the user to set boost up properly and keep an eye on over boosting, do you know how much boost the cars running?

With the J performance mani they are the cheaper ones, many people have had them years and never had a problem with them, but also many have had them cracking and breaking so just be prepared for that

you say it has a fse adjustable fuel regulator? thats used mainly with a fuel cut defender to stop fuel cut when modyfying and raising boost. any ideas if it has a FCD as youve not mentioned one? if not you may find it will hit fuel cut when putting your foot down, especially on cold mornings etc

apart from that all seems ok. depending on what boost the cars running the only thing id reccomend to improve things with that set up is maybe an uprated fuel pump. tuning developments/ walbro etc

Thanks for that detailed reply! I've just text the guy asking what boost he's been running the turbo at and how long for. Also asked if hes got a FCD set up with it :D He has mentioned that the manifold has already cracked and he has just ordered a new one from fensport (unsure of make, possibly standard?)

dump the FCD doesnt need it if he's only running 0.8bar... personally FCD realy put me off the car as that means its ecu safety precautions have been bypassed.

one quick trip up at 1.1bar and it could all go wrong, nowt stopping him/you from doing that.

nice spec but if he 'only' ran 0.8bar why have a FCD? yes fuel cut but could just lower the boost by like 0.3-5 of a bar problem solved.

as steve also said uprated fuel pump wouldnt go a miss :D

What exactly could go wrong if the FCD wasnt set up properly?

cause 0.85 bar is rougly fuel cut. even if it was 0.6 bar of boost it could still creep and hit fuel cut.

i do agree though im not a fan of the FCD/RRFPR set up at all

plug and play ecu through and through :D

i think he might be meaning that it may have been boosting more than he states, if its been running a FCD to take away the factory limit.

I S'pose in a worst case scenario...blown engine for not fuelling correctly?

yeah i ment that if he has a FCD likeness id he has run alot more then 0.8bar

I believe fuel cut is about 0.85 bar so about 12-14psi but all cars differ. my glanza ran 0.85bar on stock ecu without hitting fuel cut (with supporting mods)

The FCD alters the voltage to the ecu, so the FCD will hold say 4.5v (5v is around 1bar) but let you run more boost... but the ecu still thinks your running lower boost so the fueling will be well off (so running lean), making the engine run super hot and potentially fudge your piston rings or worse :D

Aahh i totally understand now! This has really put me off now lol :D I'll still go and view it to see whats what. Ill be going to see this car twice; there is no manifold on it at the moment due to the last one cracking. Ill be going again next week to view it when he has a new one put on. Is there any tell tale signs of a damaged engine, strange noises etc?

find out when he last topped it up with oil, check oil level and condition of oil.

as above but with coolant. if something like head gasket/ringlands etc is going it will use oil or coolant.

make sure the engine is cold, start and watch temps raise make sure thermostat kicks in when it should... listen for any strange tappety noise from the lower half of the engine (the heads make alot of noise anyway, so dont get worried about that)

and then just general visual checks for leaks, blows etc etc :D

Thanks, i'll check all of these when i go and view it! Thanks for the help :D
