Metallic Screeching Noise from frond of Car when Turning Left

Recommended Posts

Hello all

Around 1 month ago i had a new clutch fitted and since then i've been getting a metallic screeching noise from the front end of the car when i turn left. The more i lock the wheel the louder it gets and also gets even louder depending on how quick i take a left turn.

I had the car put through the MOT recently and i mentioned this to the MOT inpector but all the steering was spot on as the MOT inspector checked it out and couldn't find anything.

I've got a feeling it has something to do with the clutch as they had to take off both front wheels and release the relevant bars in order to get access to the gearbox.

Any ideas on what it could possibly be as its gets very irritating and could also be causing further damage. It can also be heard by people walking by as they often turn their heads to see what the noise is.

Any info much appreciated.

Many thanks

i would almost bet 100 quid that it is the brake backing touching the brake disk, which can show a sign of wheelbearings needing to be replaced soon also

hi mate

Sorry forgot to mention, that the brakes are fairly new on the car and they were fine when inspected at the MOT. Also the noise doesn't happen when i brake only when driving as normal.

The wheel bearings were also inspected at the MOT and they are fine.

Do you think this has something to do when i had the clutch changed as i said that they had to remove the wheels and also the steering arms (sorry if thats the wrong phrase) in order to get to the gearbox.

Thanks

Take of the front wheel an check to see if disc is marking the cover plate, they might have slightly bent it in an not noticed so it might jus touch everytime the wheel presure is that way...

hi mate

if this is the problem, what is the solution i.e. how would i fix it?

Thanks

UPDATE

Right i've just got home and done the brake shield push back using a screwdriver, however it has made the problem a lot worse, i now get lots of metallic screeching noise when turing left and right, even if i turn very slightly i am getting some noise. It was quite embarrassing as it was very loud and at one point i was considering calling the AA. So overall what has been suggesting on here has made the problem worse

Any other suggestions?

Theres your problem then dude lol, if you have tried to push one side out like streetracer said one side will have pushed back on. get the wheel off and just remove the dust shield. you dont need it anyway!

hi mate

But is it defo the dust shield as i've heard it could also be either the Wheel Bearings or Power Steering Fluid.

Wheel bearing could give you that symtom yes, but it would be proper fucked lol. You'd spot it straight away if you checked the wheel for play up and down/side to side

hi mate

but i just had the car MOT 2 weeks ago and the wheel bearings were fine. I once did have a wheel bearing fail on a previous car but even when that was the case the car drove fine.

Take the wheel off and push the plate out with 2 screwdrivers, also have a good look over the brakes ect. see if theres anything obvious, do the simple things first rather than jump right into a costly problem

hi mate

but wont you need to push the plate out on all sides i.e. top bottom left and right?

Thanks
