How to Change CV joint?

Recommended Posts

Well i discovered my split CV boot too late and now im getting a knocking when driving and turning so the joint must be gone! I have just got my new joint today but i have absolutly NO idea how to replace it? :D

Is it a wiser choice to take it to a garage or is it fairly straight forward?

As in depth an explination as possible on how to do it would be fantastic as im prone to hitting every possible problem that could ever arise!! :D

Cheers!

first things first... if i didnt know how to do a job on a car i wouldnt carry it out.

especially something like a cv joint/driveshaft.

if youve already got the part then take it too a garage. shouldnt cost you a great deal.

if you dont try anything, you'll never learn.

i split my c.v boot last week and struggled to get the cv off the drivesaft.

in the end i ended up buying another c.v. boot that comes split that you glue together.

after fanning about with that, now if i needed to change my cv i think i would just take it to a garage to save alot of agro.

not saying it cant be done by yourself though.

Easy Mate....

Crack you wheel nuts off

Jack car up

Take wheel off

knock out the split pin if the shaft

Take off the little crown thing (sorry no idea what this is called)

Get the big 30 socket on hubnut and crack that off

Undo the 2 14 nuts and 1 bolt on the lower ball joint

Pull the hub out of the wishbone

Remove the shaft from the hub

Knock off the old cv joint by smashing the back of it with a heavy hammer (make sure you have someone holding the shaft in the box, otherwise it will come out and piss oil everywhere)

Give the shaft a quick clean

Put new circlip on the shaft

Grease up new cv joint

Line it up, put your hold hub nut on the thread of the shaft so you dont fuck it and smash that with a hammer

Take off old hub nut

Put shaft back in hub

Put hub back in wishbone

Tighten 3 14's on lower ball joint

New hubnut on shaft

new crown thingy on

new split pin

wheel back on

SHABAM! Done

That indepth enough for you
